The Recompense Fund is grateful for all the donations that have been coming in since we sent out our Annual Report. If you didn't get a copy or misplaced yours we do have it online on our website or you can click here to see it. The cover is a wonderful painting by Caroline Loder of her daughter Savannah with their dog. I know that all the nonprofits on Chebeague have benefited from the generosity of the community that continues to help them monetarily as well as with the important volunteerism. All of this is what makes Chebeague such a special place!

Last year's trip was life changing for Bea and reminded me of my commitment as a health care provider to world health issues. January 3, 2020 - Good News from CTC!!
Guess what's happening this weekend! Yes....the long awaited Independence will be put into service!!! The crew has undergone training and is anxious for her to be operational. We are still working out the timing, but don't be surprised if the next time you go to "catch the ferry" you are boarding the Independence. Captain Amanda will soon be announcing a date and time for the island to tour the boat and learn about its many safety and operational benefits/features. Our faithful workhorse, the Islander, will be hauled for its Coast Guard hull inspection and maintenance in the next few days. She deserves a rest!

Yesterday, I had a chance to get a few photos of the inside of the Independence which is getting prepared to go into service.

Today and Tomorrow the Rec Center is sponsoring along with a Small $500 grant from The Recompense Fund a program called "Island Lifelines", a NAMI suicide awareness and prevention program. Click here for more information.

December 27, 2019 - Message from CTC: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! We are extremely excited to announce that the Independence will be coming home tomorrow, Saturday, 12/28. She will arrive at Chebeague in mid to late afternoon. She will not be put into service until the crew has been fully trained on operating her. We expect she will become our primary ferry during the week of 1/6. Shortly thereafter, the Islander will be hauled for her required hull inspection. We will plan a time when those interested can tour the boat in the next couple of weeks. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

The Rec Center is sponsoring a program called "Island Lifelines", a NAMI suicide awareness and prevention program on January 3 and 4. The goal is to train multiple generations of islanders, with the program on Friday, January 3 for teens* and Saturday, January 4 for adults. The cost for the program is helped by a $500 Small Grant from The Recompense Fund.

December 11, 2019 - I just finished a book I ordered the other day called Thus Far on The Way -Fifty Years of Life on the Color Line by Kathy Grannell Kihanya and I thought it was wonderful. Billy delivered it this afternoon and I couldn't put it down. She even has a chapter about Chebeague and says that "Chebeague is one of the places her family always feels comfortable." Congratulations Kathy!!

Encourage them to come out for the day, come to the Slow Bell for dinner, and travel back with minimal expense! We'll play a rousing game of PUB TRIVIA on Friday night and an equally exciting night of KARAOKE fun on Saturday. The Whaler's Holiday Concert was wonderful as usual and I have made up a youtube after the difficult job of shrinking the programt to fifteen minutes. Those that pre ordered Trees and Poinsettias can pick them up this weekend at the school. Pick up times will be Friday 5:30PM-7PM, Saturday 10AM-6:30PM and Sunday 10AM-4PM or until all are gone. You can drive around to the back of the school and pick up your trees or poinsettias. The trees will be located under the pizza oven shelter an poinsettias will be inside the school. Parents and kids will be there to help you. If you have not yet done so, please bring a check with you at pick up time. Those that paid for deliveries will have their trees dropped off on Saturday. In 2011, the students at Chebeague School interviewed a number of older citizens to learn about Hurricane Carol, the bay freezing over and winters on Chebeague. We'll be open Friday and Saturday evenings for dinner starting at 5 p.m. and the bar will stay open until midnight, as long as we have customers. We're struggling with staff availability, so this may be the last time we are open until the weekend of December 27th, when we'll have our special pre-New Years prime rib dinner. Tickets will go on sale soon. THIS WEEKEND, we'll be serving pot roast with veggies and mashed, haddock chowder, and grilled tuna steak with chimichurri, rice and roasted veg. We'll sing karaoke in the bar each night if folks come out! Hope to see you at the Slow Bell! November 20, 2019 - The Islander will undergo her biennial hull inspection in January. Our plan is to dry dock her for the winter and put the Independence in service.

The Independence’s construction is complete and she is looking great! The boat has been sea trialed and performed well. As of yesterday (11/19) the builder is working to complete the certification process for the Coast Guard.

We are taking orders now and will not to have too many extras the weekend we are selling them, so contact Vika (viktoria@chebeague.net or 207-712-1392) in you want to order your tree and poinsettias and save yourself a trip to town. The trees are $45 or $50 for home delivery by the children and their parents. Poinsettias are $10 for 4.5 inch pot or $17 for 6.5 inch pot. Orders can be picked up or delivered December 6, 7 or 8th at the CIS School.

The MACBETH CONCERT SERIES is delighted to announce that our programs are all set for the 2020 season.  Several old friends will be back as will the Halcyon String Quartet, the young musicians who were such a smash in our finale concert for this past summer.  Perhaps the best news of all is that the Halcyon group will put on a children’s program on the morning of Saturday, August 22.  (Kids attending the program will want to stick around for a lunchtime cookout. Each morning that Danny Malloy travels on the Chebeague Ferry heading to Cousins Island and take a picture of Buoy #18 with his iPhone. He chose one picture each day for the past two months and has put them into a slide show. He finds it fascinating that the same object has so many different looks and feelings depending on its surroundings. The weather, the ocean and the skylight all play an impact. Slow Bell is open Saturday and Sunday this weekend. On Saturday, we will be open at 5 for dinner until 9, karaoke st 8:30, and closing at midnight. On Sunday, we'll try a brunch buffet from 9 to 1. Hope you'll come out and show support and help us keep the doors open in the off season. Specials this week include chicken marsala, beer- battered lobster, haddock stuffed with crab and squash soup. Hours are from 5 to 6 PM or call 846 2468 to make other arrangements. Firearm season opens Sat, Nov 2 for Maine residents only. As always no hunting on Sundays. Monday, Nov 4 is open season for all hunters. For additional safety, consider displaying an article of blaze orange for you or your pets.

There will be NO Coffee this Wednesday but there will be YES SOUP and it is Non-Vegetarian = Gypsy Soup with Sausage by Sarah Hopkins and the Vegetarian = Butternut Squash with Apple by Jackie Trask.

Richardson Monument was supposed to come today but will be coming the first week of November so if you haven't reached out to them to have engraving, you still have time - call Andrew directly at 767-2761.

A green bag full of family photos was left at the stone pier and were retrieved and put on the boat. May have been left there yesterday.

According to CMP, 106 out of 582 customers are still without power, scattered all around the island. Everyone else is grateful to have power restored.

October 18, 2019 - Tomorrow's memorial service for Marianne Durgin will happen at 11 am at the church with a luncheon at the Parish House at 1pm. All welcome to come and share a memory and join for lunch.

CMP crew was on the island this afternoon to assess the damage and have gone home for the evening and will be back tomorrow. CMP has put out a notice that estimated restore time is by 10pm on Sunday. I think it will be sooner but you all know that I'm an optimist.

Chebeague Recreation Center - Closing Update 10/18/19
Do to the lack of power, and a very large pine tree leaning on the power lines at our driveway entrance the Rec Center & Kids' Place is closed. Once power is restored and the tree is removed we will reopen. The Rec Center and Kids' Place does not have power or water. Please do not enter the buildings.

The Ice Cream Social for Friday 10/18 will be postponed, a new date will be selected for next month.

Movie Night at the Rec - Join us for Dinner and a Movie! - Friday, October 25th from 4:30-7:30 pm. You will Choose the Movie! A vote will be taken for: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - PG Or Hocus Pocus - PG. We will be serving a Pasta Dinner & Popcorn

Due to the power outage, the compactors cannot operate at the dump and we are unable to accumulate trash until the power is restored. The brush dump will be open and can be accessed through Littlefield Road (town garage).

The power is still out on the island and David and I will keep the Axiom internet working until 11 at night and then turn on in the morning.

We woke up this morning, some people woke up, but most people were up all night listening to the wind - it was wild. The power has been out all day and we don't know when it will be back. I have a generator going at the DSLAM for those who have Axiom but will be shutting it off around 11pm and will get it back up in the morning for those who have generators. I just drove around the island and there are a lot of trees on power lines and one part of South Road is blocked off from the Historical Society to Firehouse Road.

October 16, 2019 - Moxie, Beverly and Pat Murray’s dog, was attacked and injured by two coyotes yesterday morning at 5:30. He is recovering and will be ok. Beverly thanks all the calls and well wishes. Beverly was able to get the coyotes away using the light from her flashlight and probably a few screams. They then wandered away.

The museum is now closed for regular visiting hours. However, please join us THIS COMING Sunday October 20th for our "End of the Season" Open House from 1pm to 4pm. This will be your LAST opportunity to view the current "Chebeague Maritime Enterprises" exhibit, which is ending this year. Come and enjoy cider and treats with friends and visit the gift shop, where sale items will be available.

Adult deer ticks are crawling around and HUNGRY!
--Be careful when walking near brush or fallen leaf piles. Wear protective clothing and do tick checks.
-- Last year, over 50% of Chebeague adult deer ticks were infected with Lyme Disease and 5% were infected with Anaplasmosis. They were not tested for other organisms but undoubtedly they are carrying other nasty things as well. This past weekend Mary Holman collected 22 deer ticks on the edges of her yard in 1 hour!

October 14, 2019 - Marianne Durgin's memorial service - a celebration of her life - will be at 11 AM on Saturday, October 19, at the Methodist Church. There will be a catered lunch at 1 at the parish house. All welcome to come and share a memory and join for lunch. There will be a bus meeting the 10:15 boat (probably making a couple trips) to get people to the church.

October 11, 2019 - The Chebeague Island Historical Society museum will not be open on Saturday Oct. 12, as sign of our deep respect for long time supporter and Board member, Mimi Moulton, who just passed away. Her funeral service will be Saturday afternoon at the church at 1:30. The museum will be open on Sunday Oct. 13 and Monday Oct 14, from 1pm to 4pm, which are the last regular days of this season. Don’t miss the Museum’s annual Fall Open House on Sunday October 20. It will be the last chance to see the Maritime Enterprise exhibit! Refreshments will be served!

The primary responsibility of this position is to professionally ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the Chebeague Island School Office. To assist in the development and coordinating well-organized systems and procedures that support the administration and staff.  To serve as the frontline in communicating and interacting with students,guests, vendors, teachers, staff and members of the community.Minimum Qualification: Associate Degree or 2 years related work experience. Current State of Maine Criminal History Records Check approval.Must be organized, ability to multitask, exercise independent judgement including maintaining a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.This is a 35+ hour a week position during the school year 7:30am - 3:30pm.  Some work in the summer is required. Open until a suitable candidate is found.

The Hall’s soup and Community Lunch programs are in transition. Community Lunch will now become Community Supper and be offered three times a year: Anything but Turkey in November, Italian Night in January, and International Night in March. Each supper will include a BYOB option. Soup will be offered each Wednesday if possible from mid-October through April, but to do so, Ruth is asking for weekly volunteers in the kitchen. Menus will be posted weekly on this web page. The three suppers already have sponsors, but you may also sponsor a month of soups for $300. Give Sam, Ruth, or Gina a call if you would like to learn more about helping with the soup program or become a sponsor.
Come winter, the Hall is the only place that serves food to the public on Wednesdays, so if you value this service, please show your support by volunteering. If no one volunteers to help shop, cook, serve, and clean, the soup program may go the way of Community Lunch.

September 14, 2019 - Click here to see photos of coyotes from Margo Myles who lives up off of Roy Hill Road. Message from her: "We have many pictures of them. Three are attached. We are interested in hearing what is recommended. The wildlife camera shows they are going through our yard regularly between 9 and 12 pm headed toward Kim's and then back down and across between 4 and 6 am. We certainly heard them almost every night when we up there recently. The most we have seen in one picture is three of them."

I teach technology at the Chebeague Island School and am looking for a couple of old PC computer towers to have the students take apart to learn how they all function. I think it would be a fun exercise and help them get over the fears that I had first time and still do when working on the insides of a computer. Board of Selectmen Public Workshop- Coyotes- Come meet Scott Lindsay, State Wildlife Biologist for a Q & A session on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at 6:00PM at the Hall. On the island we know a dog was killed by them and we are missing at least 10 cats around the island they may be because of the coyotes.

-- The Whalers are looking for singers to sing with us for our holiday concert, no previous experience required! Rehearsals are from 7:00-9:00PM on Tuesday nights at the hall, starting on September 17th, with the concert scheduled for Saturday, December 7th.
--We’re also offering a program for younger singers this rehearsal season. Kids ages 11 and up will join us for regular practices, from 7-8PM on Tuesdays and will sing about half of the full program with us, with a special anthem just for them as well.

My first and most important venture is Chebeague Aquifer Protection...I am re-aligning my equipment so I can remove disabled vehicles, scrap metals and old oil tanks....I am also removing running, but unwanted vehicles, as I have in the past".
-------- "The second thing I am focusing on is Monarch (butterfly) preservation.... Over the past 3 years,I have quit mowing my milkweed in order to give the Monarchs a food supply. This year has been a banner year with over 100 chrysalis, and an almost 100% hatch rate. I will be expanding my milkweed, and building butterfly "kiosks" for future generations. I also ask Islanders to stave off mowing of milkweed (Monarchs #1 food choice) until first frost. This will help to ensure an adequate food supply is available.

August 31, 2019 - The Library is no longer hosting the chebeague.org website that I have been managing for 23 years and has been hosted at the library almost as long. As a result of this change there is a cost to host the site that I am doing now on GoDaddy. To help with the expenses of running this site I am asking those who advertise on the rental page to send the annual cost of $25 to me instead of donating it to the library.

Message from CTC: We provide carts for our customers' freight between the Stone Wharf and Cousins Island. Unfortunately, we have found carts around the island on lawns and in vehicles. One of our employees even saw one of our carts at Hannaford in the back of a car! Please respect the purpose of these carts and do not remove them from either wharf. Thank you.

Message from May: Hi folks! Busy week this week. Please remember we are open from 12 to 4 for ice cream today through Sunday, as well as our dinner hours. For entertainment this week we have our last Pub Trivia Night for the season Thursday...sign up at 8, play starts at 8:30. On Friday, we will be celebrating the season with Competitive Karaoke. Sign up from 8 to 8:30 for round 1, 9 to 9:30 for round 2, and 10 to 10:30 for round 3. Prizes for winner of each round. One song per person per round. Saturday night we welcome the Westenders back ($5 cover) and we will again collect donations for Stephen Ross Scholarship Fund. This will be our last collection for the season. Sunday we welcome Backshore and Thompson's Hill for an early evening show starting at 6:30. Phew. Ok. So now on to the food...how do scallops, fried clams, lobster rolls, and turkey dinner sound? We'll also have haddock chowder and beet and goat cheese salad. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the 92nd Street Y. She returns on Wednesday, August 28 to Chebeague’s own distinguished venue, the United Methodist Church. Thursday (tomorrow night), we will welcome 4 of the 6 members of the Mallett Brothers to the Slow Bell. Doors will open at 7:30 and there will be a limited number of bracelets sold for $15 each. Once we reach capacity, no one else will be able to come in, some come early! We will be splitting our share of the profits from the door with the Stephen Ross Fund! After a triumphant double concert by Paul English and friends, the MacBeth Concert Series continues this week with a performance by long-time Chebeague favorites the Seaside Brass Quintet. Their program at the church on Saturday evening, August 24 at 7:00 p.m. will feature an eclectic program of classical, jazz and popular tunes. Then, on Wednesday, August 28 at 7:00 p.m., internationally-acclaimed concert pianist Diane Walsh returns for her third appearance on Chebeague. Her recital will include works by Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin and even a couple of rags. Plan to attend both concerts to experience two more Chebeague magical musical moments.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10th at 7:30pm (note special time) at Chebeague United Methodist Church, the MacBeth Concert Series presents a DOUBLE JAZZ CONCERT featuring Grammy Award winning artists: jazz vocalist and founder of the New York Voices, Kim Nazarian and her husband and associate professor of jazz studies at Oberlin, Jay Ashby who join the Paul English Jazz Quartet, featuring violinist, Mari Black. Paul has worked with Kim and Mari in the past on special programs (Mari is no stranger to Chebeague audiences, nor is Paul) and together they all intend to WOW us with an incredibly creative and exciting double program. Joining the ensembles are guitarist, David Clarke, and drummer Bill Manning (both with Novel Jazz Septet) and Ian Ashby (bass and Kim and Jay's son) who round out the sound. And, lucky for us, Herb Maine was available and will be be playing bass with Paul's quartet. BTW, all of the musicians have agreed to spend the night on Chebeague so that the concert is not cut short because of the ferry schedule AND because they will be up bright and early Sunday morning for the 10:00 am Bossa Nova Sunday Service at CUMC. SUNDAY, AUGUST 11TH AT 10:00am at Chebeague United Methodist Church a Bossa Nova Worship. Composer Paul English has arranged a number of Brazilian standards by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ivan Lins ,Gilberto Gil and Leila Pinheiro, along with hymns and some of his original sacred works arranged in Bossa Nova Style. 18 of our island vocalists have been rehearsing for weeks under the direction of Ben Yosua-Davis, to prepare for this beautiful celebration of Brazilian popular music. A timely testament to the father of Bossa Nova, Joao Gilberto, who recently passed away.

The project includes South Road / East Shore Drive on the East End, Division Point Road, Bar Point Road, South Road across from the Tennis Courts and at the School. Message from Slow Bell: Trying to get the message out early...we have a busy week and some schedule challenges at the Slow Bell coming up this weekend. We'll also be serving beet salad and haddock chowder along with all your favorites. On Sunday, our buffet will be pizza, soup, and salad. MacBeth Series Continues with a Unique Double Feature.  Celebrated jazz pianist and composer Paul English returns to Chebeague this weekend for two not-to-be missed concerts.  The first half of Saturday evening’s performance will feature members of Maine’s own Novel Jazz Septet—plus champion fiddle player Mari Black. For the second half, the group will be joined by New York musicians Kim Nazarian, a member of New York Voices; Grammy-award winning trombonist and producer Jay Ashby; and bassist Jay Ashby.  On Sunday at 10:00 a.m., Paul and colleagues will join forces with the United Methodist Church choir to present an exciting Bossa Nova worship service.  Please note that the Saturday concert begins at 7:30 p.m.  Both will be held at the church.

Plans are under way for the Hamilton Reunion on Saturday, August 24 from 9-4:30. You don’t need to be a Hamilton to attend. This is a great opportunity to learn more about island history. We need to know who will attend to finalize the plans. If we have at least 30 people the cost person will be $30, and we can rent the school bus. The price will go down if more people come! The event will include coffee, snacks, lunch, a lecture, cemetery tour, bus tour (you will learn something even if you live on Chebeague), a cemetery tour, access to the Museum’s genealogy and photo collections, and an opportunity to meet some great folks who share your roots. On Friday a boat with some teenagers was broken down and a good samaritan tried to fix the motor and then towed the boat with the teenagers to Chandlers to be picked up by parents. June 17, 2019 - The Independence launch is scheduled for 1:30 PM on Friday (7/19). We will be supplying transportation. The bus will meet the noon boat, stop by the Route One lot, and then head for East Boothbay. There will be a brief ceremony - complete with a blessing and christening - followed by refreshments. The bus will leave a 3:15PM to make the 5PM ferry home. If you are driving, there will be a parking sign. If you are taking the bus and haven't signed up yet - call the office tomorrow. We look forward to seeing you there!

Deer Point Visitors: please remember Deer Point is restricted to foottraffic only. Please park your vehicles on the town road, as blocking the entrance to the road needs to remain open for residents and emergency vehicles. Please carry out your trash and leash dog at all times. Most importantly, no fires are ever permitted due to extreme fire danger. We appreciate your respect for the land and hope you enjoy your visit to the Point.

I go to the beach early mornings and my dog meets and plays with other dogs - we are all very careful to pick up dog waste every time. We want to make sure that it is clean for the beachgoers later in the day. There are people and lose dogs who are using the beach and not picking up the waste - we are afraid that that will ruin it for all dogs. Please, please clean up your dog waste from the beach.

If you get a call from Apple saying there is suspicious activity on your iCloud account - JUST hangup - it is a scam. The same with the phone calls saying your microsoft has been compromised. SCAM SCAM SCAM - everyday I get those calls.

I finally put together a video of the last Whaler's Concert - I took 30 to 40 seconds of each song and put them together. A 1 1/2 hour program down to 12 minutes so you will be able to see some of the highlights of the show if you were unable to attend or just enjoy parts of it again. The talent on Chebeague is remarkable!

Historical Society Lecture at the Hall, Monday, July 8 at 7 pm: The Story of Malaga Island. Come hear John Mosher, Historical Archaeologist at the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, tell the story of Malaga Island, an interracial community in Casco Bay from the Civil War until 1911, when it was evicted by the State of Maine. Malaga Island is only 11 miles from Chebeague.

The Parade and Picnic Committee would like to thank everyone for pitching in and making the 2019 celebration a rousing success. The parade floats showed great creativity, reflecting how there is music in “All of US.”   The community picnic was lively and musical and delicious, showing pride in our community and new school.  The picnic was a joyous gathering, for reunions with old friends and making new friends.   Thank you to everyone! As you may have read Maine has a shortage of available lifeguards. This is affecting pools and beaches that normally offer lifeguards. Only two lifeguards are returning but will not be back on island until August. This year when the pool opens in July we will open without lifeguards.
-- Pool Attendants will be on deck to monitor the entry gate, check and sell pool passes, sell food from the new Snack Shack, and Open and Close the pool. Pool Attendants are not lifeguards.
--- This change has caused new pool rules effective immediately - Please note NO exceptions can be made:
All Children must be supervised by an Adult that is 18 or older. No one under the age of 18 can enter the pool area unless they are supervised by an Adult that is 18 or older. Adults must sign-in and list any children they are supervising. Pool Memberships or Drop-in Day Fees must be paid prior to entering the pool. (Please Plan ahead) -- All Guests Must Follow Staff Directions --

Second Annual Junior Golf Camp. Last year’s inaugural junior golf camp, jointly sponsored by the Great Chebeague Golf Club and the Chebeague Recreation Center, was a huge success. We are pleased to announce that the camp is back for its second year and encourage juniors ages 7—16 to register for this fun and instructive event. June 15, 2019 - Thursday evening the students of Chebeague presented their technology project they have been working on. They are creating websites about the history of some areas of Chebeague. In doing this they picked out a couple an old photo of certain areas and then tried taking a present day photo from the same place. They then put the two together in an iMovie so you can see how the landscape has changed. Click here to see how things have changed over 100 years in some places.

Congratulations to Linda Grant who recently received the 2019 Yarmouth Latchstring Award.The name is derived from the town motto “Our Latchstring Always Out”, is intended as an acknowledgment of those citizens whose examples of citizenship and leadership keep Yarmouth a warm and welcoming community of caring individuals.

Have rake, will travel? We’re looking for some help with the (postponed) Island Commons yard clean-up on Thursday from 10 until noon. June 8, 2019 - Town Meeting Day - 9am at the Hall. A lot of people showed up for the Town Meeting. The BroadbandCommittee initiative was voted down, the Sunset Land motion was voted down and the first firework's ordinances was voted down and the second one was approved. Everything else in the warrant passed with a few little increases of funds in a couple of items. The meeting went from 9am until after 1pm.

Mark your calendars. The Chebeague Mystery Theater’s 2019 play, Ricker Returns, will be held at the Hall Saturday evening, July 13th at 7:30 PM. A cast of a dozen of your friends and neighbors features Jen Corson and Jonny Miller in starring roles. Reserve seating tickets can be purchased at Kids’ Place;

Poochie's Ross turns a spry 90 years young tomorrow, Friday, June 7th. His favorite line is "I can't believe my life is half over already!". He wants no fanfare but we thought simple message announcing his big day would be ok.

The Stephen L. Ross Scholarship is pleased to share that we had 3 applicants and we were able to give each applicant an award. We have awarded Tiffany Calder $5,000 for her first year at St. Anselm, in New Hampshire; Aaron Belesca $5,000 for his first year at University of New Hampshire; and Ethan Belesca $5,000 for his second year at Maine Maritime Academy. We are proud to be able to assist our island students and we thank you for your continued support of the Stephen L. Ross Scholarship. With your generosity we were able to award $15,000 in scholarships this year. Congratulations to all of our island graduates.

50 years ago there was a major extended Vietnam battle for a mountain named Dong Ap Bia know as Hamburger Hill following a vicious, 11-day fight. Only 30% of the force that landed on May 10 would reach the top on May 20. Bruce Tompkins, was there then and at the 50th reunion of the 3/187 that took place at Fort Campbell, Kentucky recently. Bruce created this video of the event click here to see. I love it at the end when they all were honored as they came into the hall.

Aquaculture Scoping Session - Summit Point, LLC
A public scoping session will be conducted by Summit Point LLC on two separate, proposed standard aquaculture lease applications with 20-year terms. One 100-acre lease is proposed northeast of Clapboard Island in the towns of Falmouth & Cumberland and the other 100-acre lease is proposed off the west shore of Chebeague in the Towns of Chebeague Island and Long Island. The public scoping sessions will be held in succession on Tuesday June 4, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Harrison Middle School in Yarmouth, ME. The Great Chebeague Golf Course closed to all play until May 31st. The decision has been made to close the course to all play until May 31st for several reasons:
- Moisture remaining from heavy spring rains and damage from winter weather
- Several greens have been overseeded and should not be played
- Several tee boxes have been seeded and have not had enough sun to promote growth.

News from the Rec Center: It is with regret that we announce that Dave Hoidal has moved off the island and will be leaving the position of Executive Director next month. Many people know Steve through his work at Chebeague Fire and Rescue, as well as his caring, competent work as the Animal Control Officer. His background is in business, marketing and sales. Three days and two nights - Minute Man Park, Tea Party Ship and Museum, Hampton Inn (swimming), Oyster House, Freedom Trail, Paul Revere House, Dancing at Fanuell Hall, Commons, T-green line, Boston scavenger hunt, Science Museum, Omni Theater, Planetarium, Sleeping on floor of Museum, Cheese Cake Factory, Duck Boat - WOW.

When I went to add to the website - I lost it all but was able to recover up to the 14th. If there is something I left off please let me know.

The 4th of July Parade theme this year will be “We Have The Music In Us”. The Council received 10 suggestions and it was a close vote. The winning suggestion came from Eliza Jane Helpin. Thanks to everyone who submitted a suggestion. Time to start designing your float!

Have you longed to paint a vignette of the Stone Pier on a funky MCM bureau? If so, the Red Studio has a challenge for you: take an unloved piece from our annex and transform it into a work of art, a fun and functional piece of furniture, or a bit of whimsy. Each unique piece will be included in our August auction. Auction? Yes! There's always something old and something new afoot at the Red Studio!

Mandy Thursday – Thursday, April 18th, 7 PM – We remember the servanthood of Christ and his Last Supper with a handwashing service and Communion.
-Good Friday Tenebrae Service – Friday, April 19th , 7 PM – We journey with Jesus over his last few hours on earth with this service of light into darkness.
-Easter Sunday – Sunday, April 21st – Easter Sunrise service on the East End at 5:45 AM, with a light, informal, potluck-style breakfast to follow at the Parish House. Easter Worship service at 10 AM in the sanctuary, with Sunday School at the Parish House at 9:45.

Easter Flower Forms in memory or in honor of loved ones are available in the Parish House. Forms are due on Thursday, April 18th, or you can email the church office. Flower drop-off is Saturday, April 20th between 9 AM and 1 PM. If you are unable to get to town to purchase flowers, contact the church office at 846-6987 and we can get flowers for you. Please pick up your flowers after Easter Sunday worship.

It is not too early to start thinking about the 4th of July Parade. Please submit your ideas to chebeagueislandcouncil@gmail.com or send a note to P.O. Box 12, Chebeague Island ME 04017. The winner will get 15 minutes of private shopping time before the grand opening at School House Seconds!

In a continuing effort to protect Chebeagues' Aquifer, Kim Boehm will be removing junk cars for the 2019 season. If they can be safely driven on and off the barge there will be no charge, but donations are always accepted. If they need to be towed, the charge will be approximately $400.00, possibly more....so get rid of that clunker before it dies. Thanks, and remember No Clean Water, No Island Community....Kim Boehm 846-2468. If vehicles do not run, but can be made to do so with minor work, I can assist in that also...Thanks. and think "Clean Water"....KIm

March 5, 2019 - CUMC is hosting a Mardi Gras Pancake Dinner tonight from 4 - 7 PM! Crafts for all ages start at 4 with dinner beginning at 5. On the menu: pancakes, bacon, sausages, berries and fruit, crepes with creamed chicken and mushroom, and more. Cost is by donation; all funds will go to support the island ministry of this church.

Of course I haven't decided yet if I'm doing it but I will know for sure in a couple of days! Remember to come down and support our brave plungers at 11 am at the Niblic. You are welcome to plunge and not collect pledges but of course if you do collect all the better! Don't forget to sign the release or have your parents sign if you are under age.

February 13, 2019 - The Casco Bay Islands Alliance offers small grants to island non-profits in support of projects and activities that benefit Casco Bay island communities.

February 7, 2019 - Message from May: Hey folks: We are still working on our goal of $6500 to go to Zanzibar on the Baobab Canopy Medical Mission March 2. Towards that end, and in support of their community service mission, the Teen Center is sponsoring a TURKEY DINNER at the Hall Saturday, February 9 at 5:30 p.m. We will be serving turkey, mashed potatoes, squash, stuffing, rolls, cranberry relish, and apple crisp. Donation is $12 pp, children under 12 $6, family max $35. We will have a slide show available of last year's mission, a 50/50 raffle, and karaoke following dinner. Come sing with the CUMC Youth Choir, for ages 8-12, which practices after Sunday morning worship (11:30AM) and sings in worship twice a month. We’ll learn the basics of vocal technique through a combination of games, songs, and exercises, and we’ll explore how to connect with God in our everyday lives, all in the context of a fun, lively community (cookies always included!)

The famous Great Black Hawk that was hanging around Deering Oaks in Portland was found hurt on the ground during the storm on Sunday morning and was transported to Avian Haven (we have brought many sick birds to them) where he/she is recovering from frost bite - Avian Haven's Facebook page is keeping us informed about the bird's condition.

Message from the Historical Society: Bookkeeper Needed! Our long-time bookkeeper is retiring. The Historical Society is looking for someone to take over that role. Must be Quickbooks capable, entering our transactions, cutting our checks and creating monthly reports. $15 per hour, probably averaging three hours per week. Training from the current bookkeeper available through 2019 to get up to speed. Ralph munroe is participating in 2 stair climbs this March. the first is for the MS society on March 2, 2019. It will be 61 floors and Ralph's first time competing in this climb. please help him reach or even pass his fund raising goal of $600 for Multiple Sclerosis, Climb to the Top Boston 2019 is going to be awesome

Message from May: Hi folks: The Slow Bell will be open this weekend for two special events. Friday night we're offering a special Italian buffet. Lasagna, seafood fettuccini, salads, chicken cacciatore, soup, pizzas, and desserts $24. This will be instead of our regular menu. Friday night we will have karaoke at the bar. On Saturday we will have our annual Holiday Dinner...prime rib or crab stuffed haddock or veggie loaf with cashew gravy. All come with choice of soup or salad and dessert $38. There will also be live music featuring Jerry Smith. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR SATURDAY ONLY. TWO SEATINGS 5:00 and 7:30.
