The Recompense Fund is grateful for all the donations that have been coming in since we sent out our Annual Report. If you didn't get a copy or misplaced yours we do have it online on our website or you can click here to see it. The cover is a wonderful painting by Caroline Loder of her daughter Savannah with their dog. I know that all the nonprofits on Chebeague have benefited from the generosity of the community that continues to help them monetarily as well as with the important volunteerism. All of this is what makes Chebeague such a special place!

January 3, 2020 - Good News from CTC!!
Guess what's happening this weekend! Yes....the long awaited Independence will be put into service!!! The crew has undergone training and is anxious for her to be operational. We are still working out the timing, but don't be surprised if the next time you go to "catch the ferry" you are boarding the Independence. Captain Amanda will soon be announcing a date and time for the island to tour the boat and learn about its many safety and operational benefits/features. Our faithful workhorse, the Islander, will be hauled for its Coast Guard hull inspection and maintenance in the next few days. She deserves a rest!

Yesterday, I had a chance to get a few photos of the inside of the Independence which is getting prepared to go into service.

Today and Tomorrow the Rec Center is sponsoring along with a Small $500 grant from The Recompense Fund a program called "Island Lifelines", a NAMI suicide awareness and prevention program. Click here for more information.

Ralph Munroe will again be doing the stair climb in Boston to benefit National Multiple Sclerosis Society- you can help him reach his goal of $150 by clicking here.

School Committee Meeting will be on Wednesday, January 8th next week - see agenda.

We will plan a time when those interested can tour the boat in the next couple of weeks. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

CTC's January newsletter and January and February crew assistance schedules are now available on the news and info page of their website chebeaguetrans.com and here.

Message from Polly Wentworth: "There is an upcoming vote of new directors for the Casco Bay Lines Transit District board. Matt Purington is from Long Island and is running for one of the at-large seats. It is rare that we have someone from “down bay” running for one of these seats. Typically the at-large seats are filled by someone from Peaks island. It would be really great to have another “down bay” person on the board.
If you have any questions at all please call me 207-233-8382 or email me at pollywentworth@cascobaylines.com"

The Hall’s soup and Community Lunch programs are in transition. Community Lunch will now become Community Supper and be offered three times a year: Anything but Turkey in November, Italian Night in January, and International Night in March. Each supper will include a BYOB option. Soup will be offered each Wednesday if possible from mid-October through April, but to do so, Ruth is asking for weekly volunteers in the kitchen. Menus will be posted weekly on this web page. The three suppers already have sponsors, but you may also sponsor a month of soups for $300. Give Sam, Ruth, or Gina a call if you would like to learn more about helping with the soup program or become a sponsor.
Come winter, the Hall is the only place that serves food to the public on Wednesdays, so if you value this service, please show your support by volunteering. If no one volunteers to help shop, cook, serve, and clean, the soup program may go the way of Community Lunch.

We certainly heard them almost every night when we up there recently. The most we have seen in one picture is three of them."

I teach technology at the Chebeague Island School and am looking for a couple of old PC computer towers to have the students take apart to learn how they all function. I think it would be a fun exercise and help them get over the fears that I had first time and still do when working on the insides of a computer. If you have one that is just hanging around and you would let us use it - they don't have to work and probably won't after we get done anyway. Email me bjohnson4850@gmail.com.

A couple of messages from Kim Boehm: "I wanted to let everyone know I have drastically reduced the amount of time I am spending as an Electrician (partially due to Drs' orders) , and focusing on 2 of my favorite crusades....First I want to thank all customers for their patronage over the years...
My first and most important venture is Chebeague Aquifer Protection...I am re-aligning my equipment so I can remove disabled vehicles, scrap metals and old oil tanks....I am also removing running, but unwanted vehicles, as I have in the past".
-------- "The second thing I am focusing on is Monarch (butterfly) preservation.... Over the past 3 years,I have quit mowing my milkweed in order to give the Monarchs a food supply. This year has been a banner year with over 100 chrysalis, and an almost 100% hatch rate. I will be expanding my milkweed, and building butterfly "kiosks" for future generations. I also ask Islanders to stave off mowing of milkweed (Monarchs #1 food choice) until first frost. This will help to ensure an adequate food supply is available.

September 4, 2019 - Message from Jen at The Niblic: We are in to our fall hours and are open Wednesday thru Saturday 8-2. We will close for the season the Sunday of Columbus Weekend. Hope you stop by for a hot muffin, one of Mum’s delicious sandwiches, or maybe you are starting your holiday shopping! Either way we hope to see you soon. Thanks for a busy summer everyone!

The Red Studio is brimming with new inventory — again. Stop by on Saturday from 10-noon. HOWEVER, because our storage space is limited (and not very weather-tight), please DO NOT drop off donations at the Commons garage. Please contact Susan Stranahan or Sam McLean in advance if you have something to donate. And thanks for making this such a successful season.

September 3, 2019 - Message from the Historical Society: Our season ending SALE has been extended at the Museum Gift Shop.... 25% off our entire stock, plus 35% off the specially designed Chebeague blanket/throw, with unique island highlights, AND 50% off at a super-bargain table. Come and visit the "Maritime Exhibit" one last time before it is "retired" in October.
September 2 2019 - The highly-successful 2019 season of the MacBeth Concert Series concludes on Saturday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. with a unique and compelling program performed by the Halcyon String Quartet, a group dedicated to using music and the arts to promote environmental stewardship. The backgrounds of these young musicians are breathtaking—appearances on NPR’s From the Top, performances at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball for Barack Obama, to name a few.  Their program at the United Methodist Church includes Mozart’s String Quartet no. 21, written when Mozart was at the zenith of his powers as a chamber music composer; Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden,” one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire; a multimedia performance called “Envisioning Change in the Gulf of Maine;” and an arrangement of a song by Danish composer Rune Sorensen.   Please join us for this exciting finale to the MacBeth season.

August 31, 2019 - The Library is no longer hosting the chebeague.org website that I have been managing for 23 years and has been hosted at the library almost as long. As a result of this change there is a cost to host the site that I am doing now on GoDaddy. To help with the expenses of running this site I am asking those who advertise on the rental page to send the annual cost of $25 to me instead of donating it to the library.

School Committee Workshop Meeting this Tuesday, September 3 at 6pm - see agenda.

August 30, 2019 - The paving project has been delayed until September 3rd or 9th due to problems with barging. When I hear something more definite, I will let people know. We want to make sure that it is clean for the beachgoers later in the day. 50 years ago there was a major extended Vietnam battle for a mountain named Dong Ap Bia know as Hamburger Hill following a vicious, 11-day fight. Only 30% of the force that landed on May 10 would reach the top on May 20. Bruce Tompkins, was there then and at the 50th reunion of the 3/187 that took place at Fort Campbell, Kentucky recently. Bruce created this video of the event click here to see. I love it at the end when they all were honored as they came into the hall.

Something different is coming to the Red Studio this summer: the Transformer Corner! Do you see an old crash cart and picture it as a garden cart? Does that rusty old iron headboard scream garden centerpiece to you? Have you seen a vintage wooden ironing board and imagined it reincarnated as a bar, a kitchen island, a wall shelf? Have you longed to paint a vignette of the Stone Pier on a funky MCM bureau? If so, the Red Studio has a challenge for you: take an unloved piece from our annex and transform it into a work of art, a fun and functional piece of furniture, or a bit of whimsy. Each unique piece will be included in our August auction. Auction? Yes! There's always something old and something new afoot at the Red Studio!

December 29, 2018 - Message from ENTERPRISE FOR CHEBEAGUE HOUSING OPTIONS (ECHO)
Our island has a significant demographic problem. We have very few young families, largely because real estate inflation has rendered few houses within the financial reach of most of them. ECHO, LLC was recently formed to address this situation. We are early in the process of developing various plans.
Some have asked why it is important for Chebeague to have more young families. Aside from their important role of populating our school, in the future they will manage our government, our transportation company, our assisted living facility, our recreation center, our boatyard, our library and our small businesses including property management.
Chebeague needs ECHO in order to support a sustainable future! You may reach us via echo@chebeague.net.
