Lock Kiermaier did a wonderful presentation about what he is learning about Little Chebeague at the Parish House this morning and we will be able to share it at some time. They talked about the project the Chebeague school children did in 2016 and I said I would share it. They are little videos done by the students about 6 of the cottages and hotel - click here to see.

December 30, 2022 - Selectboard will have an emergency meeting tomorrow, Saturday, December 31st at 9:00AM at the Chebeague Island Hall. The agenda is attached.

If your home or small business incurred uninsured damages in the  December 23rd storm there may be relief ahead. The State is requesting those who incurred damages not covered by insurance—including loss due to flood, tree impact, vehicle damage, and refrigeration failure—to file a preliminary damage assessment. Any losses not covered by insurance may qualify. --To complete the assessment, the form must be submitted by email by January 2, 2023. December 24, 2022 - The power was out until about 5:30 pm yesterday. A gew areas of the island are still out today and the Boat Yard finally got power around 10 this morning. Caroling went on as planned with a nice group singing at the store the boat and the Commons!

December 23, 2022 - movie - Storm December 23, 2022 almost high tide. I put together a quick youtube video of clips of the storm around high tide with a few photos at the end - Click here to see.

Power today has been out since about 5 this morning and there is a tree down on the North Road. CMP is trying to get here but are unable because of high winds, it is around 9am as I write this. Still blowing a lot and high tide is around 10 and it is higher tide than normal so I am worried about the effects. Casco Bay Lines have suspended service as well as CTC until later.

The Sailing School announced that thanks to support from islanders and the Recompense Fund, they have bought 4 sailboats, marine radios and a second safety launch to add to the fleet next summer. The Yacht Club, which supports the Sailing School has posted its social and boating events for the summer – as well as a new Merchandise Store which has winter items available. We appreciate those that could join us in August and those that could not make it but sent condolences and silent prayers. As I looked across the crowd that was at the cemetery I was reminded that we have all suffered losses but the Island is always there to support each other. Give a wave when you pass the cemetery and remember the smiles of family and friends that have passed as you go about your day. Happy Holidays

Last night I saw The Wizzard of Oz at the Yarmouth High School with Adia Ameswright as Dorothy and I can say that it was the best ever! Adia was spectacular as Dorothy with a real toto for a while and the pupetry that went into the production was over the top. From the projections, to the special effects, acting, singing - they could have put this on at Brusnswick Music Theatre!

Dec 1st is the last day to apply for Property Tax Stabilization for Senior Citizens, also known as the Property Tax Stabilization Program (the “Program”), is a State program that allows certain senior-citizen residents to stabilize, or freeze, the property taxes on their homestead.  As long as you qualify and file a timely application each year, the tax billed to you for your homestead will be frozen at the amount you were billed in the prior tax year. Eligible residents who move may transfer the fixed tax amount to a new homestead, even if that new homestead is in a different Maine municipality. Filing deadline is December 1st.

Caution!! Huge numbers of deer ticks are crawling around Chebeague despite the drought this summer.
It is the peak of the adult deer ticks and they are eager to feed on you, your dogs, some cats and particularly deer. As long as the daytime temperature is above 40 they will be moving around and crawling up unsuspecting pant legs.

If you find a big fat tick on yourself or your pet at this time of year it is a deer tick and has a greater than 50% chance of being infected with Lyme disease bacteria!

Maine Health Nurses will be here on Thursday October 20th from 10:30-1:30 at the Hall for flu and omicron boosters. No paper forms this year. To speed up the process please call or stop by the Council Office Monday-Wednesday between 10 and 2 next week to sign up. It will still be a walk-in clinic but it will speed things up.

October 6, 2022 - The Chebeague Island Fire Dept. would like to remind all Islanders that this is Fire Safety Month. Please take a moment to check your fire/smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to make sure they are in working order. If you need assistance changing batteries or units themselves, please reach out to any member of the fire department for guidance.

For all those who've mourned the lack of original plays at the Hall, now is your chance to bring them back! October 3, 2022 - The Council’s annual Flu vaccine clinic will include Covid boosters this year! Maine Health is working on fitting us in their busy schedule but said it will be after October 15th. More details to follow. For those whose insurance doesn’t cover these vaccines or who may not have insurance, the Council will pay for both the Flu and the Covid vaccine. We hope everyone who wants to get vaccinated will take advantage of this opportunity. We will post the date and time as soon as Maine Health confirms.

The Town of Chebeague Island is preparing to join the Maine Community Resilience Partnership. https://www.maine.gov/future/climate/community-resilience-partnership. The Partnership assists Maine communities in reducing energy use and costs and/or making their community more resilient to climate change effects. Becoming a member of the partnership opens new funding opportunities through the Community Action Grant program. Public input is needed and encouraged to help the Town determine which types of projects are of the highest priority for Chebeague. Please join us Sunday morning at the hall and/or Tuesday evening via Zoom to provide input on which town projects should be prioritized for funding.
In the workshop we will:
Explain the Maine Community Resilience Partnership
Review climate hazards and impacts facing Chebeague
Hear about potential projects that can help the town become more resilient
Get community input on which projects should be prioritized for funding

The post & beam timbers are being raised on the Second Wind Farm on Roy Hill Road! This will be a Barn Museum displaying Chuck’s antique farm implements collection, most of which came from past farms on Chebeague. Get Out! Nature Walk - Deer Point Volunteer Naturalist/Leader Caitlin Gerber

--- With a strip of gray ledge separating its thatch of dark spruce from the ocean, Deer Point is reminiscent of a typical downeast Maine island. It is a wild place, exposed to the open ocean, and it has been a favorite spot for picnics for generations. Thanks to the generosity of its owner this spot will stay in its wild and scenic condition and be accessible to the public forever. Participants will learn about native and invasive plants, the current state of the lobster fishery, and the effects of climate change.
This nature walk is scheduled for a 9:00 am start due to the Chebeague Transportation Company’s ferry schedule. Mainland participants will take the bus from the CTC parking lot at 7:45 am and board the 8:15 ferry to the island. Transportation to the trailhead at Deer Point will be provided, and participants will be back to the ferry to depart on the noon boat. Tickets for the ferry must be purchased online beforehand at: https://www.ctcferry.org/

July 20, 2022 - The Chebeague Island Library, a welcoming center to the entire Chebeague community, is seeking a Children’s Librarian/Associate Library Director. July 19, 2022 - The CIHS exhibit “Growing Up on Chebeague” opens on Friday July 22 at 11am! It is the story of how childhood experiences create a sense of place. It contains items that have been loaned or donated from 135 of your island friends! The exhibit includes more than 400 photos depicting the adventure of being a child on Chebeague from the Civil War to the present. More than a dozen people worked on the exhibit beginning in 2019. Covid slowed up the project but the end result is worth the wait! A special shout out to Cathy MacNeill who devoted hundreds of hours to the project. Click here to see some of it.

We welcomed the Long Course participants off the CBL ferry for a 6am start at Chandlers and the last pair ran across to Little Chebeague just before 7am. They finish this year on Peaks Island. Sebago Long Lake Music Festival 50th Anniversary Celebration, Thursday, July 21, 4:30 p.m., Chebeague Community Church.  (Please note the special time for this concert.)  Musicians from the Sebago Long Lake Music Festival got the MacBeth Concert Series started over 20 years ago.  They’ve performed on Chebeague every summer since (except for the past two seasons interrupted by the pandemic) and have become part of the Chebeague extended family.  We can’t wait to welcome them back to help them celebrate the festival’s 50th anniversary.  The program will include works by von Weber, Piazzolla and Robert Schumann.  We will also be recognizing Beth Howe and Mac Passano, co-founders of Chebeague’s concert series.  Questions?  Contact John Howard (ceciljohn6@gmail.com); Carl Tubbesing (carldt@gwi.net).

July 16, 2022 - Thanks to the many who turned out for the Hall's annual MOH Arts and Crafts Extravaganza. We are excited to be able to host this event and to announce that the winner of the Yarn Cruise raffle is Janna Hobbs!! Happy cruising, knitting, and crocheting, Janna! And see you all next year.

The annual Casco Bay Swim Run will be held TOMORROW Sunday, July 17th. This year the long course athletes will be starting at Chandlers Cove Wharf at 6:00am. If you are an early riser and would like to cheer on these incredible athletes they will come through Chebeague Island Boat Yard shortly after then. Come cheer them on as they start their trek swimming and running through the islands. This year the will end on Peaks. For an approximate map of the course go here. The Swim Run organization will make a donation to the Stephen L Ross Scholarship fund for our island volunteers that help with this event. Major duties include balancing and depositing all cash receipts, performing all accounting functions, producing financial reports, performing internal audits, maintaining personnel files, and processing payroll. The Office Manager is also responsible for handling customer requests and concerns as well as scheduling barging and charters.

A group of friends and I want to help Brenda (granddaughter to Gladys Bennett) and Ernie Collela with medical expenses. Brenda has a long road ahead with treatment for breast cancer, and just found out she has no job to go back to afterwards. Ernie has also been in and out of work for illnesses of his own. Our goal is $5,000 but if we can exceed that I know they will be so thankful. They are a great family, lifelong Yarmouth residents, devoted to their sons and grandchildren. Jazz on a Summer’s Day! --Novel Jazz Septet Returns, Sunday July 17, 2:00 p.m. at the Chebeague Island School Yard.
-- Last summer’s performance may have been the Novel Jazz Septet’s best ever on Chebeague. Children and dogs running around the lawn chairs and blankets. Pick-up truck rattling by. And the “beyond category” music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. The cats (that’s jazzspeak for musicians) tell us that Chebeague is their favorite place to play---and it shows in the joy they take in playing familiar standards such as “Take the A Train” “Lotus Blossom,” and “Chelsea ridge” and in introducing us to rare tunes they’ve found in the archives at the Smithsonian Institution.  Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and settle in for another entrancing afternoon of “America’s classical music.” -- In case of rain the concert will be held at the Chebeague Community Church.

July 7, 2022 - The Chebeague Rec Center is hosting Maine Ultimate for their second tournament on the island on Saturday, July 9 at Volunteer Field! This is a great chance to watch seasoned ultimate players compete, but also to see in action our Learn to Play campers, who have been practicing their skills for several weeks. The Rec Center is appreciative of the support it receives from Maine Ultimate in this unique fundraising opportunity, and happy to be able to host an exciting event on the field. Thursday we are open starting at 4 p.m. for ice cream, 5 p.m. for dinner and takeout and the bar will be open until 11. We have KARAOKE starting at 8:30 Thursday. On Friday, we will start with breakfast from 8-10 a.m., ice cream at 4 p.m. and dinner at 5 p.m. We will welcome back the Pinwheel Brothers on Friday night from 8:30-11, $5 cover. All ages and abilities are welcome to join us this Friday, July 8th from 9:00AM to 11:00AM at Littlefield Woods on Chebeague Island for an Invasive Plant Management Morning!
We’ll cut back invasive barberry, bittersweet, honeysuckle, multiflora rose, and possibly buckthorn and autumn olive especially in the area near the old horse chestnut tree. Clippers, limb loppers, shovels and mattocks will be the tools of the day. If you have any of these tools, please bring them along. Work gloves and tough long pants are recommended. At some point during our session we’ll take a break and land trust staff and members and Littlefield Woods neighbors will share what they know about this beautiful preserve. We’ll meet at the kiosk on Littlefield Road.

July 3, 2022 - Message from my birder friend Sally Pachulski: "I spent two Sunday mornings birding part of Chebeague Island for the Maine Bird Atlas, a four year project which ends in August. The purpose of the birding surveys is to observe and listen to birds of a designated block and watch for behaviors that would indicate breeding birds. I birded from the corner of Huddum Circle and Chandlers Cove Road to the Nibic along John Small Road. I did a few side roads, Jenks, Rose Point and Charleston. The number of species was a surprise and I thought it might inspire some Chebeague Birders to get out and enjoy!!!" - Click here to see her report!

Yesterday the post & beam sill arrived at the Second Wind Farm. The Chebeague Island Living History Farm (CILHF) with the Island community’s support are building a post & beam Museum Barn for Chuck’s antique farm tool collection. The barn sill is made of hemlock. Stop by and see the building site behind the Farm Stand.

Message from CTC: The July newsletter is now available along with the July and August crew assistance schedules. We would also like to remind people to be careful while driving in our parking lots and on the Stone Wharf. With summer coming into full swing, there are a lot more people walking and biking in these congested areas. Also, a reminder to parents: please make sure you keep small children with you when walking in our parking lots (and the Stone Wharf). We have already seen some close calls because drivers have a hard time seeing our smallest residents and visitors. Thanks!

The annual Mystery Theater will be held at the Island Hall on Saturday, July 30 at 7:30 PM. It is always standing room only so don't be late if you want seats. Not this year, though. After the show attendees will have the opportunity to determine whodunnit, and the best answer will get an oscar-like award.

Here is the May weather information from our weatherman Bill: Chebeague’s May, 2022 weather will be remembered (or forgotten) for its persistent easterly winds, sparse rainfall, and abrupt temperature swings. On the mythical “average day” the temperature ranged from 47 to 63, humidity was a generous 76%, the wind gusted to 18 mph, and it didn’t rain: measurable rain fell on only 8 days, totaling a skimpy 1.58 inches - less than half the amount typical for May. May 25, 2022 - The Island Commons Fathers Day 5K is being moved to SUNDAY, June 19th so that people are able to attend Bob Dyer’s service on the 18th.

SHADY GROVE FARMSTAND, will be open Memorial weekend, Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 - 3:00! We will have lots of fresh produce; corn, salad greens, onions, potatoes, citrus, baguettes, croissants, our beautiful eggs and much more. The Cafe is not quite ready, but come and take a peek at what is to come.

May 19, 2022 - Message from May: Hi folks: We will be open this weekend for our first opening with our new menu. I hope you will come out and try some of our new items and re-experience some of your old favorites. We will be open for breakfast on Friday (8-10 a.m.), with eggs, pancakes, fruit, coffee cake, and cinnamon buns. We'll then open for dinner Friday and Saturday at 5 p.m. and serve until 8 p.m., with the bar staying open until 10. No specials this week, as we are trying out our new menu and need to get through a learning curve. We will have at least a couple of flavors of ice cream and hope you'll make it out! Message from the Dyer family: "If you don't have 20 minutes don't stop" and he certainly never did. Bob Dyer passed away peacefully at the Island Commons this morning and now, knowing him, is probably out for a sail in the Maybe with the love of his life Beverly Dyer.

Update from Leanne Libby for Tom Calder: As many of you know, Tom fell at one of his jobs just over a week ago. He ended up with multiple cuts which required stitches and two broken ribs. The ribs are slowly getting better and some of the stitches have been removed. He did end up with an infection in one of the cuts and has been on an antibiotic for a few days. He returned to his doctor yesterday and that cut looks better. The doctor feels he has a soft tissue injury to one of his legs which still hurts like crazy! He and I both wanted to send a heartfelt thank you to all who have donated to his Go Fund Me page. This has allowed him to be home to rest, let everything heal and not have to worry about getting himself to work in order to pay his bills. There have been 99 people donate to this fund and every time I look at those names I get tears in my eyes realizing that so many people have donated that we worked for as teenagers and then as adults at their properties. So to our family and friends we couldn't have done this without all of you and for that we will be forever grateful. This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. We are grateful to our teachers for all they do daily and the community they have built here at CIS. Last year in surrounding schools, children followed a hybrid model and attended in person two days a week. Here on Chebeague Island, our students were in school five days a week. They didn't miss a beat and this is all because of our teachers. If you see them on the boat or on the island, please give them a thank you for all they have done, and continue to do, for our island students.

We would like to thank Viktoria and the Select Board for facilitating and orchestrating the installation of the much needed “transition floats” for the CTC ferry to shift as needed during the dredging process. Thank you to Chuck and crew for getting the floats prepped and installed so quickly and keeping the roads safe.   A thank you to Matt, captains and crew at CTC for providing safe transportation to and from the island and shifting the ferry as needed.  Much appreciation and thanks to May and the Slow Bell gang for providing a wide assortment of wonderful meals and relaxation at the Slow Bell for the crew.  Many thanks to Genaro for joining the dredge team, assisting with the daily work and coordinating communications with the Chebeague Island folks. Thank you to Paul for keeping our living accommodations warm and our land yachts full of fuel. Special thanks to Jonathan for being part of the dredge team and for making available the Sunset House to house the crew and an office for the Army Corps of Engineers and for providing an assortment of vehicles for touring the great island. May 1, 2022 - Booster shots are now recommended for those over age 50 whose last shot was four months prior (thus, in 2021.) We have a full set of scheduled patients between 9 am and 11:30. Instead of heading off on the noon boat, the nurses have agreed to stay longer and serve walk-ins from 12- 1 pm. Please bring your vaccine card. April 27, 2022 - A message from Emily Todd's Family: "We would like to thank everyone who helped our family navigate the past 1,236 days since our daughter, Emily, was taken from us. Yesterday a jury of twelve reached a unanimous verdict of Guilty on the charges of Murder, Felony Murder, Robbery 1st Degree and Carrying a Pistol without a Permit. While this is not justice, it is the best outcome for this part of the process. The next step will be preparing for the Sentencing hearing at the end of June. We will be forever grateful for the expertise of professionals who gave testimony during the trial-there were many. We were overwhelmed with their compassion for Emily and our family.
While we have been grieving privately through this painful time, we want our entire community to know that we appreciate the love and support from every one of you and have frankly needed it. We continue to be astounded by the many people who have shared memories of Emily and the way she impacted their lives. In fact, when we arrived home last night, we found a beautiful card in the mailbox that once again reminded us of how her beautiful spirit and light shined on so many and continues to do so.

$975,000 as authorized by our Town Meeting last December, 2021. We were first among eight projects funded. Official notification to follow. The Broadband Committee has developed a website which hopes to answer any and all questions about the proposed fiber network, now being considered for funding by the ConnectMaine Authority. Message from Kendra: "A few years ago when the pandemic was just beginning I asked that people send birthday wishes to my Aunt Syl as she was feeling a bit blue by not being able to get out and see people. Well, on April 28th she is going to celebrate her 90th birthday and I hope we can all surprise her again and shower her with some more Chebeague love. Message from Jon Rich: "I am now collecting water bottle caps and am asking anybody interested on the island to save these caps and get them to me. These caps are melted down and used to make prosthetic limbs for veterans. I was rather shocked this is not more widely known in the public. I will hand them on.

We will be open TONIGHT from 6-8 p.m. with some local musicians jamming, cake, and pizza by the slice $5 (while they last...sorry...no take or whole pizzas). The bar will feature $5 drafts! Come on down.

Please join us Saturday afternoon at 4:30 pm at the Hall for a presentation by Sarah Haag and Sam Hollander of the Boston Child Study Center. This program is geared toward middle and high school students and their parents to debrief on the effect the pandemic has had on all of us and some strategies to move forward. There will be a baked ziti dinner afterward. This is bound to be interesting for all...and quite delicious.

The Cumberland County Public Health Dept is pleased to return to Chebeague to offer another COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Monday May 2nd from 9-11 am. The nurses are happy to provide all types of COVID vaccines: 1st or 2nd primary vaccine doses, or first or second boosters. The only caveat is that, if they provide a 1st vaccine here, that individual will have to find their own subsequent doses on the mainland.
The nurses can bring all brands of the vaccine: Pfizer pediatric dose for ages 5-11, Pfizer 12+, Moderna and J&J. Be aware that the current recommendations for second boosters is that they are for people whose last booster was at least four months prior, and who are either over age 50, or over age 18 with an underlying immune compromising condition.

The Prince Memorial Library has just uploaded the Middens program in Archaeology of Casco Bay that many of us missed because of the Wharf Study Meeting on Thursday night. I just watched it and it is facinating and near the end of the presentation the guest archeologist Thomas Bennett (tbennett@cumberlandmaine.com) mentioned that people could email him if you are interested in helping or having a dig on your property. April 8, 2022 - Hearing tests will be available tomorrow, Saturday 9-11:30 AM at the Health Fair! An Audiologist from Harvard School of Public Health will be joining the Casco Bay Partnership nurses to provide Islanders with a hearing evaluation. Don’t miss this chance to check in with an OSHA instructor to check your hearing and learn how to protect yourself from hearing loss.

The workshop entitled “Fitness: Body and Spirit” cohosted by the USM Nursing students and the Chebeague Rec center was enjoyed by all 31 attendees. Here are a few pictures of the school children checking out a few of the fitness stations at recess (Yoga, balance beam, Battle ropes and hand weights for muscle building.) Such fun!

MacBeth Concert Series Announces Blockbuster Season. April 4, 2022 - As everyone has probably heard, the 1950 United States Census is now out for the public. If you are interested in seeing who was on Chebeague or anywhere else in the country just click here and search by communities. For Boston I had to find a map and area where I was living at the time that showed the "Enumeration District" as our names didn't come up in the search, probably because of poor writing. I did finally find it. For Chebeague you would go to Maine, Cumberland County and then the Enumeration number is 3-21.

March 17, 2022 - Annual BIG NIGHT! The CCLT, Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust every year on the mainland have a BIG NIGHT - when amphibians are heading to the wet areas to lay their eggs in vernal pools. I know of a number of vernal pools and have found spotted salamander eggs but I have never seen them traveling to the sites on Chebeague and I think it would be fun to figure out where and when we could witness the BIG NIGHT on Chebeague. Let me know if you have any ideas and where we could witness. I know there are a couple of areas in Littlefield Woods where there are Vernal Pools and also in woods off School House Road on both sides of the street. Email bjohnson4850@gmail.com.

Chedemption Volunteers needed! We need help during the months of April, May and June.It's very simple to volunteer during these months as you only need to open the shed when the transfer station opens and return do do the bagging 20 minutes before the transfer station closes. Chedemption is so simple now, no sorting and counting and lugging banana boxes. Just fill the clynk bag with an assortment of cans, plastic and glass and place the bag in the trailer.

Shell middens are accumulations of shells, bones, and artifacts situated along Maine's mainland and island coasts. They were left behind by Native peoples who harvested shellfish and other marine animals along the Maine coast or islands. Many shell middens have been discovered on Chebeague Island and the Cumberland mainland.

Due to forecasted heavy snow and dangerous road conditions today, CTC Bus service has been suspended through at least the 1:45pm/2:15pm trips with additional cancellations possible. February 24, 2022 - Message from CTC - The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for our area beginning early tomorrow morning (2/25) and running through early Saturday morning (2/26). Bus cancellations are likely tomorrow. The ferry service is expected to run as scheduled.

The library's monthly middle school night is Wednesday March 2 at 3:30! Get dropped off from the bus or join us anytime - the event goes until 6:30. Bring snacks and a mask, homework to work on, an art project, or come find a good book to read! We will also be working on St. Patrick's Day crafts.

Polar Plunge this Saturday at 11 am - plungers so far are Erika Neumann, Kiran Grewal, Hayden Corson, Anna Wasenius, and Savannah Loder. Please, please if you are plunging or want to plunge wear something on your feet. I was there today and the tide will be out a ways and it is very rocky! Shell middens are accumulations of shells, bones, and artifacts situated along Maine's mainland and island coasts. They were left behind by Native peoples who harvested shellfish and other marine animals along the Maine coast or islands. Many shell middens have been discovered on Chebeague Island and the Cumberland mainland.
-- Thomas Bennett offers an examination of shell middens, what they tell us about the Native lifestyle, and how private citizens can become involved in protecting this important cultural resource. Thomas Bennett first excavated a shell midden on Mosher Island in Freeport in 1986. He has worked on archaeological digs in Arizona, Maine, and Massachusetts, where he was field supervisor on the Boston Harbor/Spectacle Island shell midden dig, a component of the Big Dig.

Last weekend, the Chebeague Island Fire & Rescue fielded a team in the 31st US National Tobogganing Championships, hosted at the Camden Bowl in Camden, Maine. The whole Fire & Rescue organization was involved, with Ralph, Brian & Christopher having the privilege to represent Chebeague Island and the work of the team. Initiated by Denise Bonneville, Chebeague F&R built the toboggan from scratch, beginning one year ago, including felling the tree (thanks to Ralph's mom for the donation), milling, steaming, bending, fabricating and refining the sled to its final precision state. The run drops down a 400ft chute in under 9 seconds with a top speed of 38mph, sending the victims (athletes) another 1,200ft across the frozen pond. The team tied for 29th out of more than 100 3-person entrants. Over 1300 participants from as far away as California were involved. Click here to see photos and video!!

Message from Bev Ross-Murray: "I want to send out a huge "thank you" to everyone who helped my Dad and me after I took a hard fall on the black ice this past Friday morning, breaking my ankle. So many friends came in a flash to help me get home; then sanding Dad's driveway in preparation of the rescue's arrival and the expert care in transporting me. Special thanks to Charles Hall, Gary Ross and all the wonderful, competent folks on the rescue and at CTC for fast transport to the mainland. Nursing students from the University of Southern Maine Community Health program will be on Chebeague for the next few Thursday mornings. Working with Jenny Hackel, NP, they want all Chebeague residents to know that it is National Heart Health month! Valentine’s Day is the reminder for us to take care of our hearts (as well as our sweethearts). Heart disease is still the #1 cause of death in the United States. February 3, 2022 - Message from CTC - The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area with ice, sleet and up to ten inches of snow likely tomorrow (2/4). Bus cancellations are likely, beginning with the 6:15am/6:45am trips in the morning. The ferry service is expected to run as scheduled.

Congratulations to Arianna Stefanilo who was the featured cook on Portland's 207 show - great job! - click here to see. In 2012 we had a fabulous fundraiser to help Arianna go to Austria with her college, click here for a photo of her with her teacher and other students who helped prepare a fabulous dinner for the island. Here is a photo of her with a lot of her friends who helped serve as well.

The Slow Bell will be open this weekend, Friday and Saturday nights. Our specials include chicken or eggplant parm with pasta, beef stew with salad and rolls, and turkey and barley soup. We will also feature a new pizza (potential add on for the summer), a steak bomb pizza--Alfredo sauce, shaved steak, peppers, onions, mushrooms and cheese. Should be the BOMB! Our desserts will include carrot cake, key lime pie, limoncello tarts, and brownies. Starting on February 18th, we will be open on Friday mornings for breakfast from 8-10 a.m. Coffee, cinnamon rolls, donuts, eggs, homefries, waffles, fruit, yogurt, a lot of your favorites! The Island Commons today says goodbye to Stephanie Smith, who served as Navigator for our popular Chebeague Cares in-home service. Stephanie joined the Commons team in 2018 and last March took over her new position at Chebeague Cares, handling direct client care, scheduling and attracting new clients for this expanded Commons service. She made many friends while she was part of the Commons team. Service to our clients will continue uninterrupted. We wish Stephanie the best in her new position.

Axiom internet and phone were down today for a few hours as there was a problem with equipment between Portland and Boston. This affected many communities around Maine.

Message from Selectmen Chair Donna Damon: "On behalf of the Town of Chebeague Island, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Viktoria Wood as Chebeague’s new Town Administrator and Christine Auffant as Chebeague’s new Town Clerk.
--- Viktoria Wood grew up on Chebeague after being adopted from Russia by Stephen and Beverly Johnson. She graduated from Greely High School and received a Bachelor of Social Work from USM.  After living off the island for a decade, she returned to the island when her daughter started school and was soon employed by the Town of Chebeague.  While working for the Town, she completed her Master of Social Work, but realized that her real passion was in municipal government. She was appointed Town Clerk in 2017.  After a comprehensive Town Administrator search, the Board of Selectmen appointed her to replace former Town Administrator, Justin Poirier, who recently became Monmouth’s Town Manager. Viktoria, her husband, Tom and two daughters live on Chebeague and are building a new home on the island. She has a deep commitment to the community and looks forward to working for the people of Chebeague.
--- Christine Auffant has owned a house on Chebeague for 15 years and has lived on the island full time for five years. She has worked for the Town for five years as Deputy Clerk and assistant to the Board of Selectmen. Christine and her husband, Steve have two grown sons who live in Maine. Christine looks forward to continuing to work for the Town of Chebeague as its new Town Clerk."

January 7, 2022 - CTC's bus service is canceled today through the 1:45pm/2:15pm trips due to heavy snow. More cancellations are possible in the afternoon. Message from Katy McCann: "Winter 2022 Yoga & Movement - Yoga and Mindful Movement Classes with Katy are back. I’ll be offering in-person classes with the support and cooperation of the Hall and the Island Council.
Classes are Tuesday/Thursday, 7:30 - 8:45 am (no class on vet Thursdays),
Tuesday Jan 11 - Thursday March 17 (10 weeks). I’m thrilled to share that the Island Council will sponsor 1/3 of the cost of each class for each participant! So, normally $15 per class, for these 10 weeks classes will be $10 each and you are welcome to purchase a 5-class pass for $50. (If this is cost prohibitive for you, please contact me privately for sliding scale options.)
The Hall and Council asks that all participants are vaccinated. Masks are optional. The Hall is spacious enough for us to spread out and also is equipped with 3 high-quality air filters. My classes are for all bodies, all levels, all experiences. Classes are a blend of yoga and restorative exercises with unique cues that help you work with your body as it is right now, while creating the strength, mobility and ease of movement you crave. No super bendy, acrobatic stuff – just feeling better.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

One of the exciting things that are happening in the bird world is a Stellar Sea Eagle has been seen in Maine and right now is in Georgetown/Reid State Park. There have been a few people on the island including Stephen who saw a huge eagle with white on it from a distance and decided it was an owl so I hope everyone is keeping their eyes open because it is only a few miles away from here right now. If it ever did decide to stay here a while I don't think the boat could handle the swarms of people who would show up.

Tomorrow Stephen and I will be walking and travelling around the East End of Chebeague for the annual Christmas Bird Count that we have been doing for many years. I will post the results when I get them. The area that is included is North of Littlefield Road and the waters toward Harpswell. We always check out the bird feeders in all the yards to count. So far I will be able to report on is a Baltimore Oriole that has been at the Burgess feeders.

Message from Chloe: Join us at the library on Thursday 1/20 from 3:30-6pm for Young adult/high school night! We will be going over the Compass Workforce Grant available from the Island Institute for ages 15-30! You do not have to be a student. We will also provide information on other scholarships available for travel, school and gap year. High school students can get off the bus from the school boat. Please bring masks and a snack if you wish. Students are also welcome to work on homework instead or come to socialize and connect with other young islanders. This event is open to all ages high school -age 30.

I hope everyone has been as busy as I have, enjoying family and friends over the holidays! Last week a group of people sang carols in the center of the island in Littlefield Woods. Looks like it was a great time and I will try to make it next year for sure. December 22, 2021 - COMMUNITY CAROLING update from Erika — thanks to everyone who came to Carol in the Woods on Dec 14th! It felt very "Whos down in Whoville” in the middle of the woods where all trails meet. We will soon be sharing some video and photos. On Christmas Eve morning, for many years I have looked forward to meeting at the store, seeing Julie, enjoying her nice spread on the counter that she puts on for her holiday open house at the store and most of all, seeing islanders of all ages kick off Community caroling around the island. Sadly, due to the Omicron virus, Julie and I decided to cancel this year’s community caroling event. Even outside, even masked we do not feel comfortable singing en masse. The store will still be open (masks required). Wishing everyone a safe, patient and happy holiday!

KN95 masks purchased by the Town of Chebeague are available for the community. A KN95 mask provides better protection than many other face masks, if you want more protection than most cloth or disposable masks. These masks are reusable, and available free of charge.

NOTICE: Today there is a Maine wide issue with an internet trunk line that is causing intermitent problems with the internet and phone lines here on Chebeague and other areas around the state. Axiom and Consolidated are working on the problem and are hoping to have it resolved by the end of today. I will keep you updated on the progress. As of 4pm a cable on CCIs equipment was replaced and everything is back to normal.

Message from Kim Boehm: "I would like to thank CTC and all of its employees, for assisting in my junk car removal/aquifer protection project. Over 35 vehicle (or parts thereof) were removed, as well as many loads of scrap metal. old tires, lead acid batteries and several hundred gallons of waste fluids. This not only saves the Town money, but goes a long way in protecting our one and only water source. Also thanks for all the people who have helped in my efforts, either physically, mentality or otherwise....Kim"

The Chebeague School Holiday Concert was tonight and we tried to zoom it for all the families and friends that couldn't be here. It is a little rough on the sound and sometimes hard to hear and understand but we will perfect it for the next concert. This was our first attempt at a concert live zoom.
