ECOLOGY RESEARCH PAPER: Investigate the Plight of an Endangered Forest Animal
Choose an animal and research its life and habits. Take notes about what you find. (Make sure you keep a list of sources as you take notes so that you can prepare a bibliography.) Your information should include:

Classification (Latin name)
Relatives in the animal world
Appearance (adaptations to its environment)
Stages of life (nurture of young, lifespan)
Location in an ecosystem (thorough description of habitat)
Activities (ecological niche, predator-prey relationship)
Other species in the community
Reasons for endangerment

ECOLOGY PROJECT: Finally, you will present your findings in a written report and create a small but sturdy diorama or design a birth announcement for your animal You may choose to prepare either of these projects to go along with your endangered species research report.

Your project should be visually informative...so that a person learns something about your animal (habitat or nurturing of the young) just by looking at it.

A "Shoe Box" Diorama: (for people who like to build)

  • Displays the animal in its habitat.
  • Clearly shows the four features of habitat (food, shelter, water, space)
  • Has a background, middle ground, foreground
  • Some items are three dimensional
  • Outside of box is covered (so the box doesn't say Nike or Nabisco)
  • Stand-up tag label that tells the animal on display and your name.

    • A Birth Announcement: (for people who like to draw & write)

  • What the babies are called (cubs, chicks, etc.)
  • What the females/males are called (doe, buck, etc.)
  • Number of babies in the litter
  • Size, Weight
  • Time of year the animal was born
  • Where (so that we get a clear idea of habitat)
  • How long they will stay with the parent
  • Includes whether both parents will care for the babies

    • BE CREATIVE!

    January 31 - Notes are due
    February 7 - Rough draft due
    February 14 - Final draft due

    February 28 - Diorama/Birth Announcement due
