Sue Spalding
Sue grew up in Springfield Massachusettes but summered every year on nearby Bustins Island. She vowed that she would one day move to Maine. She married another Bustins Islander and moved to Freeport in 1977 - as close as you can get to the island off-season. She was always very invovled with music and started to play the violin at age six. Recently she took up the euphonium, which she now enjoys playing in Freeport's Pine Tree Coastal Winds. She graduated from Oberlin College after which she lived in southern France for a year to study the language. She earned her MA from Ohio State University, then taught English as a second language and French before switching to music. In Maine, she has taught in Raymond, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Chebeague, Long Island and Richmond from which she recently retired. As a family, hers is water-logged. Her husband is a naval architect, and after attending college, her two sons returned to be on the water. One lobsters out of Freeport, and the other works on the Casco Bay Lines ferries. Only the dog in her old age prefers dry land. Her passions are music, nature, languages and islands. At Bustins, she is the municipal clerk and archivisit, runs a Nature Center and publishes the island newsletter. She is very happy to be teaching on Chebeague once again. She taught music here from 1985 - 1990, again from 1994 - 1996, and always hoped that she would get a chance to come back. |
