William F. Swann

Yarmouth, ME ; William Francis Swann, 85, of Bluff Rd. & Chebeague Island, died Tuesday at his home in Yarmouth.

He was born in Chevy Chase, Maryland, a son of Dr. William F.G. Swann and Sarah Frances Mabel Swann. He attended the Haverford School, Swarthmore College and graduated from Harvard College in 1937 with a bachelor's degree in science.

He married Carolyn Zwick in 1941. She died in 1995.

After college, he went to work for Eastman Kodak, where he worked for 34 years in various scientific capacities, including providing photography products and services to NASA in the early days of the space program. In 1971 he took early retirement to move to Maine with his wife.

He was a lifelong summer resident of Chebeague Island, where he was a member of the Chebeague Island Methodist Church, the Chebeague Island Historical Society, Great Chebeague Yacht Club, Golf Club, and Tennis Club. With his wife he was active as a preserver of postcard and photographic history of Chebeague.

His interests were many. He enjoyed photography, tennis, sailing and golf. He spent much of his time in retirement working with stained glass, working in his garden and enjoying time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are his daughter, Sarah Swann Van Fleet of Yarmouth; two sons, Larry Swann of Sante Fe, NM, and Dan Swann of Glen Ellen, CA; three grandchildren, Becca and Jeremy Van Fleet of Yarmouth, and Abigail Swann of Glen Ellen. Also surviving are a sister, Sylvia Briggs of Oreland, PA and a brother, Charles Swann of Wallingford, PA.

A private family service will be held on Chebeague Island during the summer. Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Donations may be made to the Merriconeag Waldorf School in Freeport in memory of Bill Swann.
