Alice Estelle Desmond Schmieder

Oct.14, 1903-January 4, 1998

Only Daughter of Alice A. and Frank T. Desmond, Alice was born in Providence and lived there until 1986 when she moved to an assisted living facility in Newport, RI.

Alice married George E. Schmieder July 22, 1946 on Chebeague Island Maine where Mrs. Schmieder's uncle built a waterfront cottage, which remains in family ownership. Alice's first trip to the island was in 1907 and she returned every summer until 1991.

Her husband George died on December 26th, 1968 at 50 years of age. The couple had no children.

Alice was a graduate of Pembroke College (merged with Brown University in 1971) class of 1923 and served in various positions with her class alumni association over the years. She was Class Alumni president from 1995 to 1997, Class Treasurer from 1980 to 1992, Class Agent for 19 years and was Chair of the 1983 Brown University Reunion fund.

During the early 1950s the Schmieders kept the Brown Mascot, a brown bear cub, at their home and Mr. Schmieder would hold the animal on the sidelines of Brown home football games. Alice was quoted in a newspaper article of the time as saying "the bear is like a member of the family, we feed it with a baby bottle at times."

Alice is survived by a first cousin, Marjory R. Richardson of Augusta, ME and second cousins Ernest M. Richardson, of Augusta and David J. Richardson of Driggs, ID. She was a resident at the John C. Clark nursing home, Newport, RI at the time of her death.
