Janet Sue Kuntz

 

CUMBERLAND - Janet Sue Kuntz, 59, of Cumberland died Wednesday at a Portland hospital after a long illness.

She was born in New Albany, Ind., a daughter of Edgar Lee and Lula Marie Black Epperson, grew up in Kirksville, Ind., and attended Bloomington (Ind.) High School.

Mrs. Kuntz moved to Maine in 1956 and began living on Chebeague Island. She often volunteered her time as a Sunday school teacher on the island and was involved with many of the other island organizations. She was instrumental in the development of the island library.

She spent several years working the stern on the family lobster boat. She enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing and talking with people. She always had a hearty sense of humor, family members said.

Surviving are a son, James E. Kuntz of Long Island; a daughter, Janice M. Keene of Scarborough; a sister, Beverly Himes of Squaw Valley, Calif., two grandsons and a granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at 3;30 p.m. Sunday in the United Methodist Church, Chebeague Island. The Rev. Robert Leon will officiate. Arrangements are by Hay & Peobody Funeral Home, Portland.
