Madeline E. Brewer

CUMBERLAND - Madeline E. Brewer, 86, of Fenderson Road, Chebeague
Island, died Saturday at her home after a long illness.

She was born on Long Island, a daughter of Everett and Minnie Barker Doughty.
She attended island schools and graduated from Portland High School, Class of
1930.

She married Alden Hyde Brewer in 1932.

Mrs. Brewer and her husband owned and operated Brewer's Market and Spa on
Chebeague Island for 10 years and later owned and operated Chebeague Island
Boat Yard from 1960 to 1990.

She was a member of the Chebeague Island Methodist Church Ladies Aide
Society, and a charter member of the Chebeague Island Grange No.Ý576. She
was a Girl Scout leader for 27 years and served as a trustee for the Chebeague
Island Library. She was also a member of Chebeague Island Quilters, the Rug
Hookers Guild of Maine and the Chebeague Island Historical Society.

Mrs. Brewer enjoyed arts and handicrafts and was known for her hooked rugs
and quilts.

She attended Evergreen United Methodist Church of Long Island and was a
member of Chebeague Island United Methodist Church.

Her husband died in 1993.

Surviving are a son, Hartley Brewer of Chebeague Island; a daughter, Byrle
O'Neil of Chebeague Island; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandson.

There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday at Chebeague Island United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in
Chebeague Island Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home,
Yarmouth.
