medelisePORTLAND, Maine – Medelise Palomba Summa, 83, died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016 surrounded by her family. She was a native of Waterbury, Conn. and a longtime resident of Portland, Maine.

Mrs. Summa was born on June 21, 1933 in Waterbury, Conn., daughter of the late Frederick Palomba and Medelise Charters Palomba. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. John F. Summa, also of Waterbury, Conn.

Medelise graduated from Waterbury Catholic High School and Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y. Prior to her marriage, she worked at the Waterbury Day Nursery School. She volunteered for many years at Waterbury Hospital and at the Apostolate of Prayer for Healing in Worcester, Mass.

Medelise is survived by her six children, John, Geoffrey, Robert, Mark, Medelise and Patricia; her seven grandchildren, John, Caroline, Julian, Wondifraw, Kelemua, Medelise and Nolan; her stepbrother Leon F. Powers and stepsister Joan Powers Hickey.

She was predeceased by her brother and former mayor of Waterbury, Conn., Frederick Palomba, and stepsisters Margaret “Peggy” Powers Rutland and Helen Powers.

Medelise will be missed by her many close relatives and friends.

A funeral Mass will be held at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on Jan. 14, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
