Joyce B. Souchek

Don and Joyce on the beach!

Joyce B. Souchek, 92, passed away at Baysquare in Yarmouth with family by her side.

Joyce and Don Souchek and their two sons hailed from the midwest but would eventually be moved by GM to Holliston, MA where they were befriended by their new neighbors, the Wallaces, who had family connections on Chebeague. The Wallaces then invited them for a weekend on the island and the rest of the story pretty much wrote itself. Joyce fell in love with everything the island had to offer and began her relentless campaign to secure a summer island cottage.  Later, a surprise call from Don told her that the house they had in mind had come up for sale and the deal was made.  From there on, Joyce’s summers would be about family, Chebeague and golf.

In 1987, Joyce and Don became year-round island residents.  Joyce continued golfing and served as secretary of the Chebeague Golf Club Board of Directors. She was also a charter member of the Recompense Board and worked for several decades as a Town poll volunteer.

During the following winters, Joyce set about becoming a talented and dedicated quilter and a hooked rug artist. It may be said that the island fit her and she fit the island. She will be missed.

She is survived by sons, Steven H. Souchek and his wife Terry, Richard W. Souchek and his wife Linda; grandchildren, Travis S. Souchek, Chad D. Souchek and Brett M. Souchek.

She will be cremated and then join her beloved Donald. Due to virus and most family members being in Michigan and Massachusetts there will be no service.

It was her wish that in lieu of flowers please donate to the Chebeague United Methodist Church, the Chebeague Island Commons, or The Recompense Fund.
