Chebeague Island- Donald R. Souchek, 88, longtime resident of Chebeague Island, passed away on September 10, 2015 at Maine Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Iowa City, Iowa, a son of Henry C. and Gertrude (Sook) Souchek. Donald received an athletic scholarship to attend Cornell University and later transferred to University of Michigan. He was a member of the 1948 National Championship Football Team at Michigan.
He met Joyce B. Bunn while at Michigan and they later married on September 9, 1950. Donald began working for General Motors, joining the Chevrolet Motor Division in Flint, Michigan. In 1959, he transferred to Massachusetts and neighbors introduced him to Chebeague Island. Donald and Joyce rented a home for a few years before purchasing it in 1965.
He retired as Director of Finance and Administration from Volkswagen Group in 1987 and they moved to Chebeague Island permanently.
Donald was a very social and outgoing person. He enjoyed golf, working with tin and glass work.
He was pre-deceased by a brother, Ralph C. Souchek.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joyce B. (Bunn) Souchek of Chebeague Island; sons, Steven H. Souchek and his wife Terry of Gray, Richard W. Souchek and his wife Linda of Sudbury, MA; grandchildren, Travis S. Souchek, Chad D. Souchek and Brett M. Souchek.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Chebeague Island United Methodist Church. A reception will follow at the parish house.
