Katharine (Worthen) Downey

Katharine (Worthen) Downey, 91, of Hampshire Care in Leeds, died June 3 in Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

Born April 24, 1913, in Springfield, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Nelson and Emma (Merrill) Worthen.

She graduated from Classical High School in Springfield, the University of Vermont, and the Boston School of Art.

She had lived in Chebeague Island, Maine, before moving to Northampton, where she lived for a time at the Lathrop Home.

She was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the Women's Army Corps.

Mrs. Downey had been a volunteer coordinator for the American Red Cross in Springfield. She had also worked at Friendly Ice Cream in Longmeadow.

She leaves a daughter, Mary Ellen Alicandri, of Holyoke, formerly of Northampton; a brother, William Worthen, of South Burlington, Vt.; two granddaughters, ;and three great-grandsons.

A daughter, Judith M. Becker; a sister, Judith Caldwell; and a brother, Merrill Worthen, died earlier.

A memorial service will be held in Maine at a later date.
