Justin Lee Buxbaum


SPC Justin Lee Buxbaum, 23, a man of honor, died on May 26, 2008 from a gunshot wound received while serving his country in Afghanistan. Born Jan. 6, 1985 in Portland, Justin touched the lives and hearts of everyone he ever met. Justin graduated from South Portland High School with honors in 2004, having received a scholarship and an award for his academic achievements. He also played football and did indoor and outdoor track for South Portland. Justin was passionate in everything he did from his studies, to athletics and most recently in his service to our country in the Army. Family always came first for Justin. He was especially devoted to his mother and his brother, William. He was the son any parent would be proud of and the friend everyone wants to have. He was an unusually mature and courageous young man who overcame whatever obstacles were in his way to find a path to success. Justin's dreams and goals for the future included becoming an elementary school teacher and having a family of his own one day; he will sadly be missed by all who survive him.

Justin is survived by his mother, Julie A Buxbaum and brother, William M.Buxbaum of Douglas ville, Ga; his grandparents, Donald M. and Cheryl Buxbaum of Chebeague Island, and Claudia and Adair Cusack of Douglasville, Ga.; his great-grandmother Eileen Dyer-Gerry of Atlanta, Ga.; aunts and uncles, Donald G. Buxbaum and his wife Kristen of Yarmouth, Scott E. McCollom and his wife Laurie Wood of North Yarmouth, Timothy E. LeSiege and his wife Jane of Vassalboro, Abigail Buxbaum Brooks, Alexander C. Buxbaum and Christopher E. LeSiege of Cumberland, Beth E. Copp and her husband James of Windham, Maine, and Nathaniel Briggs of Scottsdale, Ariz. He is also survived by his cousins Heather Buxbaum Brand, Curtis and Brooke Buxbaum, Robert, Matthew, Christopher, and Shoshanna McCollom, Matthew and Brian McDonough; Tatyana, Erica, and Zachary LeSiege; McKenzie and Morgan Brooks; Alexis and Tia Harris; Acadia LeSiege; Victoria and Alexander Burr.

Visiting hours will be Tuesday, June 3 from 2-6 p.m. at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Funeral services with military honors will be held on Wednesday, June 4 at10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, corner of Broadway and Cottage Road, South Portland, with the Rev. Linda Brewster, Pastor of Chebeague Island United Methodist Church, officiating. A reception will follow the funeral service at the Thomas Room, 729 Broadway, South Portland. Family, close friends, and islanders are welcome to attend the committal with military honors at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4 in Chebeague Island Cemetery, North Road, Chebeague Island, with a reception to follow the burial at the Chebeague Inn.
