Catharina Jacoba (Aangeenbrug) Hunter

CatharinaCatharina Jacoba (Aangeenbrug) Hunter, 90, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2017 at McLean Care in Simsbury, CT. Born January 3, 1927 in Somerville, NJ to Arina Aangeenbrug vanVoorst and Willem Aangeenbrug. Cathy was the eldest of six children raised and educated in Bussum, the Netherlands including surviving World War II and the German occupation. Following the war, Cathy was the first of her family to immigrate to the US. She attended Hartford College for Women and married Russell Hunter in 1950.

Cathy was active in Girl Scouting in the Netherlands and then in Farmington, CT area. She formed a Lone Troop and when the Connecticut Yankee Girl Scout Council was created, was a director and for many years its treasurer. Cathy served on the nominating committee of the Connecticut Trails Council. Cathy loved music and singing. She was a long time member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Hartford, CT serving on its music committee and tutoring 2nd graders from the West Middle School. She also served on the investment committee of the Society for the Increase of the Ministry.

Cathy also was President of the Farmington Community Chest and involved with the Greater Hartford United Way. Cathy worked for many years with her husband managing their insurance and real estate appraisal businesses. Cathy loved flowers and the front yard of their Farmington home was covered with crocuses, daffodils and tulips every spring leading many a traveler to stop and take a look. Cathy and Russ loved to travel the state of CT to find their favorite places to eat lunch and made many friends over the years.

An avid golfer Cathy was a member of and former chair of The Country Club of Farmington’s 9 hole ladies group and celebrated a hole in one on Chebeague Island, ME’s golf course. Cathy enjoyed traveling extensively in Europe, the Far East, with more than 50 trips to Bermuda and spending summers on Chebeague Island. cathyandruss

Cathy is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Russell Hunter, three children R. Bruce Hunter and his wife Catherine of Farmington, CT, David D Hunter and his wife Tanja of Forest Grove, OR, and Johanna M. Hunter and her husband David Potter of Concord, MA; eight grandchildren (Madison and Sarah Hunter, Pieter, Arina, Mieke and Hanneke Hunter, and Marissa and Jamie Potter), and two great grandchildren; a brother Frans T vanVoorst of Collinsville, IL and sister Willy Zessoules of St. Petersburg, FL. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert T. Aangeenbrug of Gulf Port, FL, her sister Mieke Helms of Leamington, Ontario and her sister, Constance Kluit of Bellingham, MA. A memorial service to celebrate a life well lived will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 120 Sigourney Street in Hartford November 11, 2017 at 11 AM.
