Gladys E. Bennett


     CHEBEAGUE ISLAND -- Gladys E. Bennett, 93, a lifelong resident of Chebeague Island, died on Oct. 31, 2006, at Island Commons. Gladys was born on Chebeague Island, a daughter of Archie L. and Clara M. Bryan Bowen. She graduated from Chebeague High School and worked for her grandfather, Henry Bowen, at his store and post office where she also delivered mail.

     For many years, she and her late husband owned and operated Bennetts Garage on the Island. She later opened, Bennetts at the Sign of the Stone Sloop, which was a general store and small lending library where they also served lunches, ice cream and desserts in the summer. She later completed a correspondence course from the Lincoln School of Attendant Nursing which she used while working for many people.

She was a member of the Chebeague Methodist Church and the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Mayflower Club and was in many variety shows. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting.

She was predeceased by her husband, Albert S. Bennett; and a son, Frank L. Bennett. She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne B. Jackson and her husband Roy; grandchildren, Cindy Godin, Terry York, Brenda Colello and Brent Bennett; great-grandchildren, Heidi Pomerleau, Corey Godin, Kayla York, Bryan York, Josh Colello, Codi Colello, Kyle Bennett and Nick Bennett; and a sister, Victoria Smith of Chebeague Island. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m., on Friday at Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday at Chebeague Island United Methodist Church on Chebeague Island. Burial will follow at Chebeague Island Cemetery.
