Alfred Alfonzo Doughty


    
     SOUTH PORTLAND-- Alfred Fonny Alfonzo Doughty, 79, died unexpectedly at his home at the Betsy Ross House on Jan. 13, 2006.

     He was born on April 7, 1926 in West Point. He was the son of Cecil (Pete) Manford Doughty and Hattie M. (Wallace) Doughty of Chebeague Island.

     Fonny lived on Chebeague Island for many years and attended school there before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He was wounded in action while serving in the South Pacific during World War II, and was honorably discharged.

    During his life, he worked in the Texas oil fields as a police officer and was a fisherman and captain for many years. He loved the ocean, and sailed many seas and fought many battles throughout his life.

    His mother and father; a sister, Devona Wheller; a nephew, Jeffrey H. Doughty; and a niece, Alnah C. Doughty, predeceased him.

     He is survived by his brother, Cecil Amos Doughty, and sister-in-law, Louise (James) Doughty of Chebeague Island; a sister, Roberta Sherman of Caribou; two nieces, Melissa Doughty of Casco and Linda Doughty Kelley; close friends, Kimberly and Fredrick Preston and their children of South Portland, Mary Jo (Thurston) Sellick and sons; several grand- nephews and nieces; a great-grandnephew; and numerous friends.

     Fonny was well loved and will be sorely missed.

     Visiting hours will be 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19 at the funeral home. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth in the spring.
