Emery V. Doughty, Sr., 59

CHEBEAGUE ISLAND - Emery V. Doughty, Sr., 59, of Chebeague Island, passed away on Sept. 2, 2002 at his camp in Burlington, Maine. He was born Dec. 17, 1942 in Portland, a son of Calvin E. and Charlotte M. Doughty. A 1961 graduate of Portland High School, he was awarded a career appointment to the U.S. Postal Service by then Governor of Maine Edward S. Muskie based on his test scores.

He served as a rural mail carrier on Chebeague Island until retiring in 1984 for health reasons. Prior to his appointment, he worked as a commercial fisherman. He enjoyed numerous hobbies including hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, and traveling around the country in his camper. After retiring, he spent his winters in Florida and summers on Chebeague and at his camp in Burlington.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 39 years, Judith S. Doughty, are his sons, Emery V. Doughty, Jr., and Nathan S. Doughty and Nathan's friend, Cathy MacNeill, all of Chebeague Island; his special mother-in-law, Charlotte St. Cyr of Chebeague Island; his sister, Helen D. Curran of New York; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family in Burlington.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6th, at the Cheabeague Island United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Chebeague Care Resource Center, R.R. #1 Box 226, Chebeague Island, Maine 04017.
