David Cheever Weld Sr., 84, of Roseland died Sept. 9, 2009, at home.

A Memorial service will be held Sept. 26, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell. Interment will be at the convenience of the family at Chebeague Island Cemetery, Chebeague Island, Maine. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dancy Funeral Home, Caldwell.

Born Sept. 18, 1924 in Hartford, Conn., Mr. Weld the son of the late Dr. Stanley B. and Sarah Frances (nee Felber) Weld was raised in West Hartford, Conn., and lived in North Caldwell for 58 years.

A 1942 graduate of the Choate School in Wallingford, Conn., he earned his Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., in 1946.

Mr. Weld formed Weldco Wood Products, Inc. of Caldwell in 1984, where he served as president until his retirement in 2002. Before that, he was a partner in Weld and Whitaker Wood Products, Inc. of Princeton, and had worked for the lumber wholesaler Lawrence R. McCoy Co. of Worcester, Mass., for 29 years.

Mr. Weld served as an Ensign in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

He was a former member of the Essex Fells Country Club, where he served on the Board of Trustees and was the Men’s Golf Club Champion in 1962. In addition, Mr. Weld and his daughter, Gail W. Dunn, have the distinction of being the only father and daughter in the 113 year history of Essex Fells Country Club to have won their respective club championship.

Mr. Weld was also the Men’s Club Champion at the Chebeague Island Golf Club nine times and a former member of the Farmington Country Club in Connecticut.

Mr. Weld was a member and served as an Elder and Deacon with the First Presbyterian Church of Caldwell.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 58 years, Jean T. Weld (nee Thiel); loving children, Gail W. Dunn of Roseland, Leslie W. Mahan and her husband, Jay, of Raleigh, N.C., and David C. Weld, Jr. of Sedona, Ariz., and cherished grandson, Christopher Weld Mahan of Raleigh, N.C.

Mr. Weld was predeceased by his brother, Robert B. Weld of Las Vegas, Nev., in 2004, and sister, Barbara W. McGuire of Ithaca, N.Y. in August 2009.
