Dorothy Forbes Griffin, 96

CHEBEAGUE ISLAND - Dorothy 'Gram' Forbes Griffin, died peacefully Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at Island Commons, Chebeague Island.

She was born in Dorchester, Mass., May 21, 1907, a daughter of Frank and Claudia Sherwood Forbes. After moving to Maine, she lived in Portland and graduated from Deering High School in 1925. Dorothy was active in the local music scene in the 1920's as a member of the Sunshine Trio, a popular dance band.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred Ashley Griffin, who passed away in 1963, and by an infant son.

Dorothy spent her entire life dedicated to her family and has left them with a bounty of precious memories. Summers at her Island cottage were a particular delight for her and her family. Her gentleness and kindness were evident in everything she did. Even in her 90's, she was knitting hats for premature babies at Maine Medical Center.

Surviving are her children, Claudia Varney and her husband, Gary of Freeport, and William Griffin and his wife, Joanne of South Portland; seven grandchildren, Kathleen, Andrew, and Ryan Griffin, Charles and Scott Varney, Deborah Tomasini, and Angela Weagle; six great - grandchildren, Zachary and Jacob Varney, Tyler, James, and Ashton Weagle, and Jeremy Muniak.

A visiting hour will take place from 10-11 a.m. on Monday, July 7 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, with a graveside service to follow at 11:30 a.m. at Highland Memorial Gardens, South Portland.
