Everett (Bill) Ross


CHEBEAGUE ISLAND - Everett William Ross, 84, of Chebeague Island, died Monday, March 11, 2002 after a brief illness. He was born March 25, 1917 on Chebeague Island, a son of William Everett and Etta Lillian Upton Ross. Everett was better known not only by family, but by everyone in the community, as 'Bill', 'Uncle Bill', or 'Grampie Bill.' He attended Chebeague Island schools, graduating Chebeague High School, Class of 1936. As a boy, Everett was active in the Boy Scouts, as well as taking part in high school and island bands. In later years, Mr. Ross served as a Cub Scout master and on the Boy Scout Committee. In his early twenties, Mr. Ross worked for Rines Transfer Co. In 1940, he studied and became an electrician. He also loved lobstering and enjoyed doing it up until the mid 1950's when, due to acute arthritis, he was forced to cease. He then went to work for Merle B. Ross and Sons Construction Company, working there until retirement.

After retiring, Everett enjoyed wood carving, which he liked to refer to as 'whittling.' He was active in the Chebeague Island Fire and Rescue Dept., and in 1998, was honored for fifty years of service and was made a lifetime member. For over 30 years, Everett was also a committee member of the Stephen Ross Scholarship Fund. Mr. Ross was very active in Chebeague United Methodist Church where he held many offices, served as an usher for fifty years, sang in the choir, and even filled in as pastor on several occasions.

Everett was predeceased by his wife, Pearl M. Rines Ross who died in 1995. He is survived by his two daughters, Betsy A. Ross of Chebeague Island, and Natalie I. Ross Parker and her husband, Robert of Chebeague Island; a sister, Elsie M. Ross Hamilton of Portland; grandchildren, SFC Robert L. Parker II and his wife, Joyce of Columbia, S.C., Steven W. Parker and his fiancee, Margaret Sawkins of Carlsbad, Calif., and Lynne M. Parker Cary and her husband, David of Raymond; great-grandchildren, Bryce William Parker of Pampa, Texas, and Autumn Rae Parker of Columbia, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 15, at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in Chebeague Island United Methodist Church. The Reverend Robert Leon will officiate.

  Visiting hours will be Friday 1-3 and 6-8 at Lindquist Funeral Home in Yarmouth and the funeral service will be on Chebeague Saturday at 1 pm at the Chebeague United Methodist Church.
