He was born in Portland, Maine, the son of Beatrice (Grover) Bowen and Richard H Bowen Sr. Richard grew up on Falmouth Foreside in Falmouth, Maine where his roots and love for the ocean began. Sailing and boating were very important to Richard and as a teenager he worked at Handy Boat. RIchard also spent time on Chebeague Island where his father, Richard Sr. was born.
Chebeague Island became like a second home to Richard, and was where he met some of his lifelong friends. Richard loved dogs and was particularly saddened by the loss of his beloved Jack Russel Terrier, Ted. He also loved watching and spending time with his three grandsons. Up until his illness, he had been building a flat-bottom skiff as a gift for the boys.
Richard is survived by his son Hugh Bowen and his wife Danielle of Freeport; his daughter Eliza Bowen of Freeport; three grandsons, Connor and Cole (sons of Hugh), and Wyeth (son of Eliza); his sister Ruth-Ann Harrod of Wesley, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.
The family plans to have a private memorial gathering on Chebeague Island in the summer.
