CIYC Annual Meeting - Minutes
August
19th 2017 @ 5pm
Chebeague
Island Boat Yard
Commodore Michael Porter opened the meeting at 17:10 (that's
5:10 PM for the less nautical) and asked for a vote of thanks to the Chebeague
Island Boatyard and Jen and Paul Belesca for the use of their meeeting-room and
porch. There was general
agreemenet that, if one could not be on a boat, there was no better place to be
on a lovely afternoon.
Overall the Sailing School appears to be on track to match previous
years revenues and expenses with the exception of an unanticipated replacement
of the outboard motor on the launch. We began calendar year 2017 with a
cash balance for the CICSS of $10,662.39, which was up from the start of
2016. Revenues as of August 19, 2017 were $23,254.01 with both tuition
and donations at the same levels as 2106. The Sailing School Director
expects to turn over an additional $3,500 in recent tuition payments in the
next couple of weeks.
Expenses as of that date $17,993.42 including the above-mentioned outboard motor replacement at a cost $5,591. Payroll for the last sailing school session of the year and the annual boat maintenance and storage bill from the CIBY are the remaining expenditures. Our checkbook balance attributable to the Sailing School stood at $15,923.18. Reserving for remaining payroll and the CIBY year-end bill would indicate a balance of approximately $7,500 by the end of 2017. This would be a decrease from the $10,662.39 at the start of the year due to the outboard purchase.
The Sailing School Endowment began the year with a balance of $60,160.42 and by July 31, 2017 had increased to $63,587.74.
The CIYC began the year 2017 with a cash balance $5,406.55.
Revenues from dues as of August 19th stood at $3,211, which is
comparable to 2016 total but down from 2015 when they totaled
$3,850. The clubs expenses on that same date stood at $978.52,
leaving a cash balance of $7,759.03.
The Capital Reserve Fund is maintained in a money market account and has
a cash balance of $6,660.01.

A quick note on person-on-beach
and Optimists
1 POB: two options: a) scheduling
possibly unwilling parents to sit on beach. Pros: someone on beach. Cons: Lots
of scheduling work and questions about how to do it. b)pay one person.
pros: we have person, no one else inconvenienced. cons: $3500 +/-.
2. Optimists. Good for under
13/14. Thats probably 60% of our kids. BUT we have full fleet; Optis are one
person operation (2 if small). So weÕd need a bunch to make a difference.
Also extra cost in maintenance and storage. Also part of fun of this school is
kids in boats together. Atomize them and we suddenly look like every other
school.
My feeling tends toward if it
aint broke. But we could begin introducing a handful see how it goes.
Spend 3-5K on 4 boats to add to the one we already have. But overall I wouldnÕt
say itÕs a huge priority.
Best to everybody

o
o Schaefer Puck
VanFleet Steyoh (?)
Tonks Brillig
Cox=Chapman Biscuit
o Suggestion that we do a Rafting Party after the RIR, though perhaps at
the Boatyard
o Suggestion that Power Boats could participate by doing a Ôpredicted logÕ
for the RIR,
o maybe a lunch?
o maybe Cap Leonard, Ray Gilmartin & Michael Porter could take people
around the island with the race?
o MANY thanks to Jay for being the Committee boat and Racing
ChairÉwonderful job.
o Power Boat Lunch-suggested and Manny Morgan may be willing to step back
into Power Boat organization for next year.
Membership: (Lisa Morasch)
o Lisa would like to relinquish position- a million thanks to Lisa who has
done a very broad brush job of membership, some secretary, webmaster,
communications expert, etc. We
have been lucky to have such an invested and creative person volunteering with
the Yacht Club.
o Joan French – has offered to take up the position of Membership
Chair
o Suggestion of Junior Membership options, Senior Membership options and
lots of innovative ideas. Welcome to Joan!
SUGGESTIONS:
o SS-used to have the Webster Cup
o Used to race on other islands and local YC, which would lend our racers
their sailboats.
o Consider ways to get parents involved with actual sailing and racing.
o Consider ways that the SS encourages ÔracingÕ, in addition to
camaraderie
1. Double check what official Sailing organization the YC and SS belong
to. Our instructors are US Sail
certified.
3. Hats and Sweatshirts with YC on it for purchase.
¤ David Lynch provides embroidered goods-suggestion to check with him,
though he also does BY and do not want to feel that we are competing.
4. Smaller Sailboats (Bullseyes, Rhodes) able to be checked out by YC
members
a. Need to determine how capable the person checking out the boat would be
b. Insurance costs, though we may be fairly covered with SS boats.
5. Adult Sailing Classes-several adults have requested, we should be able
to arrange
a. Sandy Whiston might be able to get participants through Rec Center.
6. Adult Racing ClassesÉthat should get them involved!
7. Think of things to get people involved in YC, even if social.
8. Early access to sign up for SS for Members and some discount for
lessons.
9. Rowboat available for check out
10.Small powerboat available for checkout
11.ÔCost recovery feesÕ for each.
10.
Online payment option for membership (via Paypal?)
The usual fish house punch was
sserved, together with delicious hors d'oeuvres supplied by the members.
