torchOVERBEY Richard Walker Overbey, 75, - A native and lifelong resident of Mobile, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010

He graduated from UMS Preparatory School and Vanderbilt University. He was a devoted member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry and as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. He served the Episcopal Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast as its Representative to The National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Overbey was a retired businessman and active in numerous civic and business organizations, including: The Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Mobile, Mobile United, The United Way, The American Lung Association, Historic Mobile Development Association, America's Junior Miss, The YMCA, The American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and The Heart Association. He was a longtime volunteer at Mobile's Fort Conde Welcome Center. He also served as Past President of Mobile Opera, Senior Citizen Services and the Mobile Art Gallery. Overbey was founder of Mobile's Azalea Trail Run and The Port City Pacers

He was a member of the U.S. Olympic Torch Relay Team in 1980. He served as Honorary Consul to Sweden and Chairman of the Mobile Consular Corp. Overbey was appointed Officer First Class of the Royal Order of the Polar Star by His Majesty King Karl Gustav XVI of Sweden for his Distinguished Service to Sweden.

Overbey was preceded in death by his parents, Frances Walker Overbey and James Thomas Overbey.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marion Mitchiner Overbey; three daughters: Bowden Overbey Sarrett of Mobile, Lessie Overbey Brady and husband Craig of Birmingham, and LeeLee Overbey Partridge and husband Dude of Jackson, Mississippi; six grandchildren, Frances and Davis Sarrett, Caroline and Celeste Brady, and Andrew and Harrison Partridge.

A Service of Thanksgiving will be held Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 4 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends at 3 p.m. in the Parish Hall.
