July 14, 2003
Dear Chebeague Islander's,
Greetings from the Slow Bell Cafe! I wanted to let you know that on July 20th, at 7:30 pm I will again be going before the Cumberland Planning Board (at the mainland Cumberland Town Meeting Chambers), with the hope of gaining approval for the Slow Bell Café.
I have enclosed the April 2004 Cover Letter from the Slow Bell Café Site Plan Review Application, and the "Happy Fourth of July from the Slow Bell Café" letter, to inform you of my plans for the café.
When I returned from Yokohama, Japan to Maine on June 28th, I heard of a rumor stating that I wanted to open a bar or tavern, and have loud rock music playing seven days a week. This rumor was not what I envisioned for the café, and to clarify my intentions released the "Happy Fourth of July from the Slow Bell Café" letter to the general public.
I am interested in offering musical guests, on a limited basis, possibly one weekday, and one weekend night until 10:00 pm. This would be in compliance with the existing Town of Cumberland Sound Ordinance, which has always been enforced by the Cumberland Police Department. My vision includes non-profit groups sponsoring a string quartet, or blue grass band to play at the café, etc. I am very open to ideas for how the café can enhance the island community. I am not interested in loud music that disturbs the neighborhood.
Starting a business on an island is a long term, slow process. It has taken over 2.5 years just to make it to the next Planning Board Meeting. I am not interested in jeopardizing the café for a fast buck. I am interested in ice cream, seafood, and a positive community environment. Our family has been co-existing on Chebeague Island since 1910. We hope to remain on the island for the long haul.
If you have any questions or concerns with anything pertaining to the café, and its operation, please do not hesitate to contact me, or my attorney Alan Wolf at 207-781-7179.
