Slow Bell Café

The summer is in full swing and so is the work to open a new island family business. Much work has been done to help fulfill my dream of opening a business that will help bolster the economic stability of the island while offering more opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy Chebeague. The opening of The Slow Bell Café will be in stages, beginning with morning take out and building up to the full vision of the café.

The Vision: The Slow Bell Café will be a local family run seasonal restaurant, open May to October for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Traditional table service and take out will be available.

Our "On The Go" menu will include, but will not be limited to coffee, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, deli salads and ice cream. The table menu will be based on coastal fare. Lobster, clams, chowders, crab rolls, and homemade Lime-Rickies will compliment a menu designed to satisfy the appetite (and budgets) of island residents and visitors alike. A beer, wine, and liquor menu will be available to our sit-down patrons.

The total seating capacity of The Slow Bell Café will be forty with inside and outside dining options. A front deck will facilitate better access to the building and allow patrons to enjoy the view of surrounding forest and farmlands.

The vision for the café includes opportunities for patrons to enjoy live musical entertainment while dining. Events such as dinners to raise funds for island non-profits, local artist exhibitions, and wedding receptions will compliment our traditional island activities. Hours of operation, landscaping and sound insulation will be used to adhere to the existing local sound ordinance.

My overall, long-term vision for The Slow Bell Café is three fold. I want to help fulfill many aspects of the Chebeague Island Long Term Plan, operate a local family-owned business on the island, and be a valued participant in the island community. I look forward to the opening of the café and would be happy to discuss any aspect of the business with you. Further discussions about The Slow Bell Café will be held at the Town of Cumberland Planning Board Meeting on Tuesday, July 20th at 7 PM.

Very best regards,
