Dear Mr. Attorney General,

The purpose of this letter is to urge you to take swift action to protect the children of Maine from the hideous threat posed by sexual predators. Based on the information shared by the Cumberland Police Department after a near tragedy on Chebeague Island, it is clear that Maine law does not sufficiently protect children from convicted sex offenders.

I understand your office has made the protection of children your highest priority. Given the low rate of rehabilitation for sex offenders coupled with the slow legislative process, I urge you to take emergency action to plug the loopholes in Maine law which allow convicted sex offenders access to playgrounds, schoolyards, parks and unsupervised contact with children. While tragedy was prevented on Chebeague last Sunday, a sexual predator with malicious intent was set free to hunt the children of another Maine community. Please use the full power of your office to ensure that no Maine child can be threatened by a repeat offender.

If nothing is done or these loopholes are handled through a normal legislative process, how many Maine children will be victimized instead of protected ? Again, I swift action.

Very truly yours,
