Geography Terms

Atoll - a coral island shaped like a ring with a lake in the middle of it

Archipelago - a group of islands

Canyon - a narrow valley with high, steep sides

Cape - a point of land that extends into an ocean, sea or lake

Delta - a deposit,usually triangular in shape, of sand and soil that forms at the mouth of a river

Equator - the imaginary circle around the Earth halfway between the North Pole
and the South Pole. The equator has a latitude of 0º.

Fiord (fjord) - a deep, narrow inlet of the sea between high, steep, rocky banks

Gulf- part of a large body of water that extends into the land, often larger than a bay

Hemisphere - Half of the Earth's surface. The equator divides Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. The prime meridian divides Earth into
the Eastern and the Western Hemisphere.

Island - body of land, smaller than a continent, completely surrounded by water

Isthmus - a narrow piece of land joining two larger pieces of land, or joining a peninsula with the mainland

Latitude - distance north or south of the equator

Longitude - distance east or west of the prime meridian

Mountain Range - series of connected mountains

Peninsula - a jut of land surrounded by water on three sides

Physical map - a map that shows mainly physical features, such as mountains, rivers, elevation, valleys, etc.

Political map - a map that shows mainly political boundaries of countries, states, provinces, counties, etc.

Plain- a broad, flat stretch of land

Plateau - a large, level, or nearly level, area of elevated land

Prime Meridian - the meridian from which which longitude east and west is measured.
The prime meridian has a longitude of 0º .

River - A large stream of water of natural origin which drains an area of land and flows
into another river or body of water

Sound - a long and rather narrow body of water, larger than a strait, connecting two large bodies of water or separating a large island from the mainland

Strait - a passageway of water that separates two larger bodies of water

Swamp - an area of low spongy land too wet to farm, but usually covered with vegetation

Tributary - as small river that flows into a larger river

Valley - the land between hills or mountains, usually containing a stream or river
