SUBTRACTING MIXED NUMBERS

Here are the steps for subtracting mixed numbers when they don't have common denominators.
  1. Find a common denominator.
  2. Create equivalent fractions with the common denominator.
  3. Regroup if necessary by creating an improper fraction.
  4. Subtract the whole numbers.
  5. Subtract the fractions.
  6. Simplify your answer by putting it into lowest terms. (which means you may have to turn an improper fraction into a mixed number and add it to your whole number answer.)
Here is a page from one of our student-created books that explains the process.
