Geography Terms



1. Atoll - a coral island shaped like a ring with a lake in the middle of it

2. Archipelago - a group of islands

3. Canyon - the land between hills or mountains, sometimes containing a stream or river

4. Delta - a deposit,usually triangular in shape, of sand and soil that forms at the mouth of a river

5. Equator - the imaginary circle around the Earth halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole. The equator has a latitude of 0º.

6. Fiord (fjord) - a deep, narrow inlet of the sea between high, steep, rocky banks

7. Gulf - part of a large body of water that extends into land, often larger than a bay

8. Hemisphere - Half of the Earth's surface. (like an orange cut in half) The equator divides Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. The prime meridian divides Earth into the Eastern and the Western Hemisphere.

9. Island - body of land, smaller than a continent, completely surrounded by water

10. Isthmus - a narrow piece of land joining two larger pieces of land, or joining a peninsula with the mainland

11. Latitude - Imaginary lines running north & south of the Equator ( parallel to the Equator)

12. Longitude - Imaginary lines running east or west of the Prime Meridian

13. Mountain Range - series of connected mountains

14. Peninsula - a jut of land surrounded by water on three sides

15. Physical map - a map that shows mainly physical features, such as mountains, rivers, elevation, valleys, etc.

16. Political map -a map that shows mainly political boundaries of countries, states, provinces, counties, etc.

17. Plain- a broad, flat stretch of land

18. Plateau - a large, level, or nearly level, area of elevated land

19. River - a large stream of water that drains an area of land and flows into another river, a lake or the ocean

20. Sound- a long and rather narrow body of water, larger than a strait, connecting two large bodies of water or separating a large island from the mainland

21. Strait - a passageway of water that separates two larger bodies of water

22. Swamp - an area of low, spongy land too wet to farm, but usually covered with vegetation

23. Tributary - a small river that flows into a larger river
