Grace was born July 18, 1964 in Brooklyn, NY to Marilyn and Richard Nicklas. The oldest of three sisters, Grace grew up in Islip, NY. She graduated from the Academy of St. Joseph and went on to earn degrees from Mount Holyoke College and the University of New Hampshire.
Grace taught high school math, first at the Brearley School in New York and later at the Brunswick School in Greenwich, CT. Her love of mathematics was matched only by her dedication to her students. Although she came from a family of girls, was a mother of girls and was educated among girls and women, Grace knew how to teach and guide boys. Her no nonsense, practical and consistent method of teaching ensured that her students received exactly what they needed. She devoted countless hours to her teaching, tutoring and mentoring and her love for her craft and her students carried her through some of her toughest days.
Outside of work, Grace was a devoted mother and friend. Again, her no nonsense, practical and consistent approach never wavered (even if you wanted it to). She loved fiercely and completely. She was a friend to so many and a cheerleader for everyone in her life. As an adult she became an avid gardener, constantly tinkering with her native plant gardens. It is what gave her so much joy and, when she let herself feel it, 
also pride. And we must not forget Grace’s pride in her ginger bread houses, created each holiday season and culminating in a celebration with friends. She loved to travel, visiting five continents and nearly two dozen countries. She also enjoyed spending time during the summers on Chebeague Island, Maine, where her family has owned a cottage for more than 100 years. It was the walks, talks, gatherings and perhaps even the lobster that kept her coming back to her special place year after year.
Grace was the beloved wife of David, and loving mother of Charlotte of Munich, Germany and Susanna of Boston, MA. They were her inner circle and nothing in the world was more important and precious to her. She felt immense pride for her two daughters. She is also survived by her parents, Marilyn and Richard Nicklas of Ft. Myers, FL and her sisters Mary Ellen (Nicklas) Winn and Trish (Nicklas) Landgren, both of Boxford, MA. She also leaves behind her sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nine nieces and nephews, and seven grandnieces and nephews
Friends may call at the Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah, NY on Saturday, August 19th from 1-4 PM.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Holyoke Friends of Rowing, the Chebeague Island Library, or the American Cancer Society.
