Jeanne Vonderschmidt

jeanneJeanne Vonderschmidt passed away peacefully at her home at “The Island Commons” on Chebeague Island, Maine. Her passing was made easier by the loving care of the staff there and with the help of Hospice of Southern Maine. Jeanne was a vibrant woman who enjoyed life to the fullest. Her 27 years with Delta Airlines enabled her to travel the world, often with friends. She had planned even more travels and hoped to skydive for the second time on her 80th birthday (she’d already done it for her 70th)!

Jeanne was a devoted worker from her first jobs in NYC and Boston and throughout her career at Delta, and up until this year she continued to volunteer at Selby Library, was Docent for house tours, Usher at the Opera, Animal Shelter volunteer and had recently organized/revived a library at the Oakwood Manor Community where she had lived for the past 17 years in Sarasota Florida. She was an avid reader who loved a good mystery and was an animal advocate who proudly supported Mote Marine in Sarasota.

Jeanne moved to Chebeague Island, Maine last summer to be close to family where she walked the beaches, rode her bike, enjoyed boating Casco Bay, made new friends and danced to live music played by local musicians. Long-time Islanders will remember her parents, Eva and Lloyd Conrad (remember Eve’s Gift Shop?), who moved here in the 1960’s. Jeanne was a vibrant and intelligent woman who had an endearing sense of humor until the end. She was predeceased by her parents, Eva and Lloyd Conrad and by her loving husband Joseph. She is survived by her sister, Helen Damone of Freeport, Maine, and by two nieces, Sandra “Sam” Birkett of Chebeague Island, and Susan Muniak of Freeport, as well as a grand-niece and six grand-nephews.

There will be a casual celebration of her life at the Birkett’s home on Chebeague Island on Sunday March 2nd from 1:00 – 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers please consider supporting The Island Commons.
