John Van Wie Zaugg

1918-2004

PALO ALTO, CALIF. - On June 2, 2004 at the VA Hospice in Palo Alto, Calif.

Jack was born in the New York area and lived there through high school at Riverdale County School. Graduating high school in 1936, he attended Princeton University in New Jersey, where he majored in Political Science and graduated in 1940. He had a keen interest in fencing, and for several years he captained an undefeated epee team.

His graduate education at Harvard Law School was interrupted by the war, as he entered the Navy on a direct commission. He became a Lt. Commander and was the Commanding Officer of the LSM220. He eventually received his J.D. in 1946, but had seen San Francisco during his service in the Pacific and was determined to return.

In short order, he moved West, married Ana-Maria Orive (from Guatemala), and joined the Bank of California. He practiced law there, also with Kelso, Schnacke, Lehrer, Cotton and Holmes, and concluded his career at Wells Fargo Bank as a Vice-President in the Trust Department. His friends on both coasts will miss his encyclopedic knowledge and quick wit, as well as companionship for golf, tennis, sailing and dominoes.

He is survived by his wife, Ana-Maria, San Mateo, Calif.; three daughters, Ana-Maria V.W. Zaugg Plymouth Meeting, Pa., Alexandra Zaugg Swafford Los Gatos, Calif., and Renee Zaugg Nottebohm Gladwyne, Pa.; and five grandchildren.

The family will have a private gathering at home on June 6, between 2-4 p.m.
