John Joseph Sullivan

John Joseph Sullivan, 80 CHEBEAGUE ISLAND -- John Joseph Sullivan, 80, of Chebeague Island, died peacefully June 22, 2009, at Maine Medical Center with his loving family by his side.

He was born Jan. 9, 1929, in Portland, the son of Peter and Ethel Dickey Sullivan. John grew up in Gorham's Corner and graduated from St. Dominic's grammar school. John served abroad in the Navy. He worked for 40 years as a machinist for Maine Central Railroad at Rigby yard, retiring in the mid 1980s. He was a former member of the American Legion, Paul Malia Post. He loved the outdoors and especially to lobster, having a few traps. He enjoyed fishing also.

Surviving John are his wife Ethelyn Doughty Sullivan of Chebeague Island; daughters, Janine Sullivan of California, Dorothy Sullivan of Augusta, Regina Fontaine of Old Orchard Beach, Prudence Maloon of New Hampshire, sons, John Sullivan of South Portland, Peter Sullivan of Windham, Rick Sullivan of South Portland; step-daughter, Nyla Lilley of Portland; sisters, Hazel Murphy of Chicago, Kathleen Montanese of Peaks Island, Margaret Batchelder of Massachusetts, Judith Baldi of Peaks Island, brothers, Richard Sullivan of Illinois, Timothy Sullivan of Westbrook, Charles Kirk of Cumberland; and 10 grandchildren.
