Joann Perkins

CHEBEAGUE ISLAND - Joann Perkins, 87, of Chebeague Island, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 13, 2005 surrounded by her family at the Brentwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Yarmouth.

She was born in Boston, Mass., in 1917, the daughter of George and Katherine Smith Sullivan. Joann attended Jeanne D'Arc Academy, graduated from Belmont High School and attended Boston University.

Joann and her late husband, David lived in Andover, Mass., and moved to Belmont where she was active in the League of Women Voters, garden and drama clubs and was a Girl Scout leader and Boy Scout Den Mother.

She worked as a laboratory research assistant at the Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary's Howe Laboratory.

Joann and David retired to their Chebeague Island home in the 70s and wintered on Siesta Key, Fla.

Joann was blessed with artful hands and enjoyed creating works of needlepoint, sculpture, knitting and a myriad of other crafts. Her quick wit, generous warmth and accomplished culinary skills welcomed many to her home for socializing, and she gifted those she loved with understanding, loyalty and the joy of laughter.

Surviving is a son, Dr. David G. Perkins of Andover, Mass.; a daughter, Mrs. Robert B. (Nancy-Page) Harvey of Dennis, Mass.; a sister, Virginia vonFremd of Bethesda, Md.;, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 p.m., Wednesday, April 20, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m., Thursday, April 21, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 326 Main Street, Yarmouth. Interment will be at Chebeague Island at a later date.
