Sherman Everett Hamilton
Sherman Everett Hamilton, 86, of Canco Road, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. He was born in Portland, the oldest son of Leland and Elsie Ross Hamilton. Sherman grew up in a fishing family on Chebeague Island. From an early age he worked on the stern of his father’s lobster boat. Sherman attended school on Chebeague and was a member of the first class to graduate from the new Chebeague High School in 1954. After high school he joined the U S Navy and retired after 21 years of service. His second career was as a boiler inspector for Factory Mutual Engineering Global, where he work for 22 years. After his second retirement, Sherman returned to his roots, bought a lobster boat, that he named Melissa Darlene, after his daughter, Melissa who lobstered with 
him.
Sherman enjoyed hunting and supporting his children’s sporting endeavors. He served as president of the Casco Bay Youth Hockey program for 6 years and was instrumental the establishment of the Greely High School Hockey team.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years Esterann Hamilton, sons Corey Gile of York, Shannon Hamilton of Edgewater, FL, Sheldon Hamilton of Duxbury, MA, and Jason Hamilton of Gilbert, AZ, daughters, Rande Lynn Hamilton of Brunswick, Shawn Dell Hamilton of Windham, and Melissa Hamilton of Portland, a sister, Holly Dixon of Freeport, 10 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.
A gathering will be held with military honors at the Chebeague Cemetery, North Road, on Saturday Sept. 23, 2023 at 1:15 (12:15 Boat). The bus leaves Rt One Parking at 11:45 sharp. The gathering will conclude with US Navy Military Honors. Get together to follow at Portland Eagles from 6 to 8 p.m. A gathering will be held at the Portland Eagles Club on St. Johns Street that evening where family and friends can share Sherman stories.
