Grace Bennett Hamilton

GARDINER - Grace Hamilton died peacefully March 5, 2006 at the age of 95. She was born December 24, 1910 in Portland Maine, the daughter of Frank and Mildred Huston Bennett. She grew up and attended schools on Chebeague Island, Maine.

In 1928 she married Bernard H. Hamilton. His employment with Cushman Bakery allowed them to move to Massachusetts and then later to Gardiner, Maine where she resided for the rest of her life. No matter where she lived she always returned to the Island and referred to Chebeague as her home.

She was a life member of Marion Chapter #63 Order of the Eastern Star. As an active member of the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church, her church and her church family were very dear to her heart. She also enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, two daughters Barbara Hamilton and Karen Hamilton Bourgoin.

She is survived by a daughter Patricia Emerson and her husband Harold of Brunswick; a granddaughter, Susan Hensley and her husband Charles of Brunswick; three grandsons, Steven Emerson of San Diego, California; Jeffrey Emerson and his wife Gina of West Bath; and Mark Bourgoin serving with the United States Air force in Iraq and his wife Breanna. She is also remembered by five Great-Grandchildren; Zachary, Sam, Ben, Cody and Shelby, and by several special nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday March 8th at Staples Funeral Home, Gardiner. There will be an Eastern Star Service at 7p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 1p.m. on Thursday March 9th at the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church, Gardiner with the Reverend Elizabeth Bachelder Smith officiating.

Interment will be at the Chebeague Island Cemetery.
