Charles E. Graves

CHEBEAGUE ISLAND - Charles E. Graves , 85, died Feb. 20, 2002 one day shy of his 86th birthday. He was born Feb. 21, 1916 in New Haven, Conn., a son of Arthur and Mary D. Graves. He died in Freeport after living most of his life in West Hartford, Conn., and on Chebeague Island. As a teenager, he spent summers on Chebeague Island living in a beachside home purchased by his parents. He later became an active member of that community. He was a 1938 graduate of Yale University and served with the U.S. Air Force at the invasions of North Africa and Italy during World War II. After his discharge, he was employed by the Pratt & Whitney Division of United Aircraft in a variety of positions until his retirement. On July 8, 1967, he married Bertha Korder Graves in Hartford, Conn. They made their home in West Hartford but enjoyed summer vacations at their home on Chebeague Island. They shared many activities including square dancing and skiing but their special love was sailing their boat the 'Phoenix' both in Casco Bay and along the Connecticut shore area. They moved to the Highlands in Topsham in 1998. His wife predeceased him in 1999. Surviving are his cousins, Richard S. Graves, III and his wife, Judith of Chebeague Island, and their family, Trisha and Shawn Anastasoff of Scarborough; his brother-in-law, Walter Korder and his wife, Louise of West Hartford, Conn., and their children; his sister-in-law, Thea Korder Climo and her husband, James of Santa Barbara, Calif., and their children; a special friend, Carol Howell of Topsham. There will be no visiting hours. A service will be announced in the spring on Chebeague island with burial in the Chebeague Island Cemetery.
