Crooning for crackers

By J.T. Leonard, Reprinted from The Forecaster, January 23, 1997

CHEBEAGUE ISLAND - Chebeague Island resident and six-string-strumming baritone Gary Varney added music to the "Save the Cracker" cause, and expressed his grief by setting his own lyrics to the tune of an old ditty, "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean, My Bonnie Lies Over The Sea."

My Pilots don't come 'cross the ocean
My Pilots don't come 'cross the sea
There are none left here on the island
Oh, bring back Crown Pilots to me

Bring back, bring back
Oh, bring back my pilots to me, to me
Bring back, bring back
Oh, bring back Crown Pilots to me

They are not a gourmet attraction
But they are delicious, you see
We're begging, Nabisco, start baking
'Cause we want them back desperately.

Bring back, bring back
Oh, bring back my pilots to me, to me
Bring back, bring back
Oh, bring back Crown Pilots to me
