Islanders have been trying to get high-speed internet access
for years, but for one reason or another, the plans have never
worked. Now, a small group of islanders has decided to create
its own wireless internet company, chebeague.net, and they're
determined to make service available to the whole island by
the winter.
Beverly Johnson,
who runs the island's website, is heading the charge along
with her brother-in law, David Hill. They've raised $60,000
dollars from investors to get started.
Neither of them
has done this before, but Hill's job is to help small
businesses get off the ground. They've also enlisted the
service of the internet company, Mainely Wired, to help them
get started with bandwidth, equipment and the training they'll
need to be self-sufficient.
The first installations are
going in next week, and the company hopes at least the east
end of the island will have service by the end of next
month.
Johnson and Hill also hope the service will help
the island attract young families, businesses and people who
want to work from home, keeping Chebeague a year-round
community.
