CHEBEAGUE.NET OFFERS LOW-INCOME INTERNET ASSISTANCE
Great news for Chebeague Island computer users! In the spirit of providing
Internet access to all who want it, chebeague.net, Inc. now offers assistance to
low-income families so that everyone has the opportunity to be connected to the world and
to the
educational opportunities that the Internet offers.
In part, this assistance is made possible by the $75,000 grant received by
chebeague.net in 2007 from the ConnectME Authority (details provided in
ConnectME's NEWS RELEASE). The grant was used to create the network infrastructure necessary to make Internet service
available to every household on the Island. Additional T1 lines have been
installed, equipment purchased, transmitters activated, and relay stations put
in place.
As the system grows and becomes self-sustaining, we will be able to offer
confidential assistance to those who might not otherwise be able to afford
high-speed Internet service. Anyone who can demonstrate that they participate in
either of the following programs is eligible
 |
Free and reduced lunch |
 |
HEAP (PROP heating oil assistance) |
 |
Would otherwise be eligible for those programs |
|
Participants will pay only $25 per month for full Internet service and the
installation fee will be reduced to $100. Identities will remain confidential. A reduced
suspended seasonal rate will not be offered.
We are grateful for the assistance from the ConnectME Authority and the support
of our local customers and investors. We look forward to building out the system
and providing high-speed Internet service to anybody on Chebeague who wants it.
The 2011 ConnectME Grant Application
chebeague.net has applied for further assistance from the
ConnectME Authority to address the problems we've encountered as our system has
grown and demand has outstripped bandwidth capacity. We are pleased to
announce that we were successful in our application and will be upgrading the
system over the next few months.
