Economic development also plays a role in preserving and growing long term year round community on Chebeague.  This need shows up repeatedly in our recently completed Comprehensive Plan.  Part of the challenge: how do we grow more jobs on Chebeague while preserving and enhancing the characteristics that draw us to this place?  The answers may lie primarily in small scale economic development.

CICA board members have helped local lobstermen kick off a value added approach to the marketing of lobsters.  They have gone forward with the Calendar Islands Lobster company.  We’re helping start an oyster growing business on Chebeague.  We’ve also worked on grants and other support for local farming and food efforts.  We plan to get more involved in this area in years ahead.
